Hi my name is Ben Mann and I'm a criminal defense attorney with Price Benowitz. Its
important to understand the difference between regular assault cases, and domestic violence
cases.
For one those cases will be held in different courts in Virginia. For example, a regular
assault charge will be held in General District Court and assault cases can involve anyone
from the community, including people who are not family members.
Domestic violence cases are different though. And those are held in the Juvenile Domestic
Relations Court. Domestic violence cases involve cases in which people are part of the same
household or are family members.
These cases are treated differently under the law, and there's different opportunities
for criminal defendants to resolve these cases.
Its important to have an experienced attorney who can explain the differences between General
District Court and Domestic Relations Court and can also explain to you the differences
in what opportunities are available for you to resolve a domestic violence case. Because
oftentimes domestic violence cases involve more probation, classes, and also the potential
for jail time.
There treated very differently oftentimes than assault cases and its important to understand
those differences so that when you get to court, you are prepared and you know your
options.
