Well, I first chose to work on campus because I needed something that was going to be economically
friendly. This is my first job and so I didn't want to spend a lot of time commuting or a
lot of money on gas. Second reason why I chose to work on campus was because I knew that
working in an academic environment they would be very supportive of my professional and
academic roles and goals here. They are also flexible with my schedule and what I need
as far as studying for tests. Lastly, I know TWU slogan is "Learn By Doing", and so while
I had a perfect opportunity to learn the balance between academic integrity and developing
a professional repertoire Well, I certainly think that the first challenge
was just learning all the different information that goes along with this office. The Registrar's
Office does more than simply registering for classes. Whenever I found myself at the front
desk or the phone, I would get really overwhelmed with all different questions that I had no
idea what even some of the stuff was. I had no idea what an affidavit was or an audit
form was so that was one of the first challenges that I experienced. But I had no problem getting
up and asking questions and telling the student," I don't know but I will find out for you".
So that is how I met those challenges. I would certainly say that the friendships
that I've made here in these four years. I know day one walking into this office, all
of my co-workers had been extremely supportive of me and have given me plenty of advice from
everything to course work to how to change my major to how to apply for financial aid.
I feel really loyal to them and the support they have given me throughout the time here.
I have learned how to manage the different tasks that I have here within the time I worked
at the Registrar's Office. Throughout my day I have several different tasks that I have
to complete, so I've learned through working here that I'm going to take this much time
for this job and this much time for this job, get it all done. Another skill I have learned
is certainly communication skills with a different array of people; from how to reword questions
or finding alternative ways of explaining things and the best way to help a student
solve the problem that they're having. My major is communication sciences and disorders
and I am focusing on the speech pathology track. Working in the Registrar's Office has
certainly given me the opportunity to work with a diverse group of people. So I've had
multiple opportunities to learn different communication skills on how to communicate
with different people and to find the best way to solve someone's problem effectively
and efficiently and to make them feel that I care about their problem and want to help
them. Working here at the Registrar's Office, I
have been given a wonderfully supportive environment for my academic career and the opportunity
to develop my professional skills.
