What is the Wobble-Off?
Basically its a
its a really fun event
where students get to demonstrate
the fruits of their labor for one semester
the freshmen have designed these engines in Solid Works
And we get to design all the parts and the components
and we get to manufacture it ourselves in the machine shop
so we can compete in different categories
like maximum speed, coast, creativity and craftsmanship
or like minimum cost
and they go ahead and assemble
and then test
so, this is the culmination of that effort
For many, if not all of them
that is the first true design-build project
that they've ever
undertaken
They've probably designed some things in the past
but they haven't built them
They've probably built some things
that were designed, and they have instructions
but they've never probably taken a blank piece of paper
and said 'I'm going to design this'
and then with my own hands, I'm gonna go and i'm gonna build it
and see if it works
and that's what the engineering project is
that we call the wobble-off
I've designed my own engine
its a dual piston
engine
I give them one parameter, it has to cost less than $30
and its open ended
which makes for a difficult project
because we like it when things are defined
and i say it just has to cost less than $30
and it has to run
how can engineers serve God?
well one of the things we believe very strongly
is that doing what you love to do and doing what God created you to do
honors and glorifies God
and a lot of us love to build
for an engineer
maybe a computer engineer who builds microprocessors
it may be hard to find how he can integrate
his or her skills as an engineer
with his desire to be a Christian servant
So, serving engineering is our solution to that puzzle
and its finding engineering projects
that center around meeting around others' needs
and using our ability as engineers
to design and create solutions
to help other people
I think we provide an education here
that's among the finest around
the intense level of project and
activity that students will get
exceeds what you see at most major universities
the ability of a student to design their own embedded system
only happens because of the small class sizes
and the focus of the professor
that we can facilitate that type of learning
and experience for students
At first I really wanted to go to a big school
with a big program
then when I came here,
I really liked that the professors are really into it
and they love putting engineering to work
like in missions
or like just ministries
the smallness of the classes
The personal attention that you get from the faculty
That you cannot get at other universities
is invaluable
There's a misperception about the small engineering programs
and i don't know what else to say
Its a tremendous place
Its a tremendous product
