This next piece,
"The Girl with the Yellow Card" directed by Noah Reece
is a song based on the character of Sonia from Dostoevsky's novel Crime and Punishment.
Sonia is forced into prostitution to support her family,
which, in 19th century Russia, meant she must register for and carry a yellow card to mark her trade.
Music & Lyrics by Noah Reece
Arranged for this performance with the assistance of Damon Carmona (at the piano)
Choreography by Lindsay Carter
The Girl with the Yellow Card
[also featuring Sydney Shepherd on Cello and Wilson Bethmann as the Man]
Come, you young and old.
Come with lowered guard.
Come, you meek and bold
To the girl with the yellow card.
He sees her cross the way.
He spies her out for plunder.
She stands his humble prey
But cannot help to wonder
Will he like me for my eyes?
Will he like me for my hair?
Will he like me for the way I smile?
Does he even care?
Will he hold me as his prize?
Will he hold me in his stare?
When he sees me in the light,
Will he wonder if it's possible I'm there?
Did he like me for my eyes?
Did he like me for my hair?
Did he love me in the dark on the ground?
Did he smile in the dirt at the edge of my skirt?
Did he laugh when it hurt
and I uttered no sound?
Did he like me for my eyes?
Did he like me? Did he love me?
Why would he? How could anyone--
How should anyone love me?
Come, you young and old.
Come, you pure and scarred.
Come, you meek and bold
To the girl with the yellow card.
Come to the broken shell of a girl
With the yellow card.
