NARRATOR: This video covers some basic tips
for using and installing a backless booster seat.
When your child has outgrown
a forward-facing car seat with an internal harness,
it's time for a booster seat.
There are two kinds -- backless and high-back booster seats.
Use a backless booster seat when your vehicle's head restraint
supports your child's head.
This type of booster seat positions the vehicle seat belt
over the stronger parts of your child's body.
Before you begin, read the instruction manual
for your car seat
and the portion of your vehicle owner's manual
on child restraint systems.
Because every car seat and vehicle is different,
it's important to follow all instructions carefully.
Place the booster seat in the back seat of your vehicle.
Have your child sit in the booster seat
and fasten the seat belt.
Make sure the seat belt fits your child properly.
The shoulder belt should rest across the chest,
and the lap belt should be across the upper thighs.
If your booster seat comes with seat belt guides,
use them to achieve good belt positioning.
If necessary, adjust the vehicle head restraint
to a comfortable and supportive position.
Your child is now secure and ready to go.
Continue to use the booster seat
until your child is big and mature enough
to fit an adult seat belt properly.
