My name is Jackie Hill I'm a director of school partnerships for Hibernia
College UK also known as HCUK it' a national provider of teacher training specialising
in online and blended learning to teacher training.
Subject knowledge are available to prospective
trainees in shortage subjects so any one whom wants to become a teacher in maths , physics,
chemistry, modern foreign languages there are subject knowledge enhancement course
across the country, available to them, they are particularly for people who don't
have a degree or higher level qualification in those subjects. For example if someone
has a degree in economics or accountancy and wants to teachin maths or someone who has
a degree in engineering and wants to teach physics
and someone who wants to teach a foreign language but only has one foreign language
and would like to have a second one so they can offer prospective school the possibility
of teaching 2 foreign languages.
An offer from a teacher training provider is eligible for the courses very often providers
will say yes you can have a place on our PGCE or school direct course but you will need
a subject knowledge enhancement. Those people will request a place from NCTL, the applicants
themselves don't need to do anything very much in the process now, the funding is provided
from the NCLT . Not only can the applicant get the training it is absolutely free, it
is a fantastic offer and there are bursaries available for it as well so it enhances the
ITT bursaries to, it really is a win win situation for the applicant the trainee teacher and
the provider who's providing them with the teaching training course.
Interviewer: What does the course involve,
I know it will be different for different people, what is the course like?
I guess it depends on the subject and the provider it all so depends on the length of
the course for example our subject knowledge enhancement
courses will vary from 4 units to 32 units in length so it depends when people start
the course and how long they do it for. Typically for our courses because we use an
online approach people will engage in on demand sessions supported by subject specific tutor
and they get feedback through VLE,emails and so on. VLE is virtual learning environment
which they will have access to forums to engage with other learners so there would be interaction
with other people. Traditional providers will be where a person will go along to the university
and engage with other people there and there will be fixed points when those courses
start I suppose the advantage of a course like ours we have a rolling programme when
people can start for example next week is our first cohort for this year and then each
month people can start after that and the length of the course will depend on what they
the provider thinks is required they can all so have access to resources while there doing
the initial teacher training so they don't have to complete the course prior to starting
the initial teacher training course they can continue to do subject knowledge enhancement
at the same time you do have to complete it before they finish the teacher training
It really is a fantastic offer and to be honest I can't understand why you wouldn't want to
access something that will enhance being a teacher it is a great way to
I mean one of the key characteristics of outstanding
teachers is good subject knowledge, and good subject
knowledge for teaching for example someone can have a PhD in the subject but it can be
quite narrow and may be they wouldn't understand on how to break down their knowledge to a
level a young person can access and subject knowledge enhancement courses will help
you to do that.
