Backache is the most widespread
ailment in industrialized countries.
It is estimated that around 80 percent of people, sooner or later,
will have an acute or chronic episode of lumbar pain in their lives.
Therefore, it is evident that any symptom of lower back pain
should not be attributed only to the musculoskeletal
system but also to inappropriate habits or a bad posture.
There are jobs that expose people to the risk of suffering
from backache to a greater extent.
In general, at the mill it is occasionally necessary
to lift or take down heavy objects, therefore greatly affecting the backbone.
The excessive repetition of movements can be
a risk factor for the backbone’s health.
Thus, it is essential to follow the procedures
set for maximum loads and the number of daily repetitions.
Our backbone moves through flexion,
extension, and rotation; however, it should be looked after.
Raising loads repeatedly is the greatest cause
of microtrauma in the spinal column
and could be the real cause of backache.
For that reason, there are specific postures
to perform in order to avoid the concentration of weight in just one spot and distribute it instead.
The backbone should remain straight and the lower articulations
should always be used, flexing them instead
of forcing the backbone.
There are weights that are really excessive,
which is why there are specific regulations by national and international entities that
provide for the use of lifts and specific devices,
ensuring that back trauma is avoided.
Although the sitting position
may not seem important, it implies a great demand
for the backbone and can cause backache.
It is necessary to sit with a straight back resting on the back of the seat,
and it is particularly important not to remain still
in the same position for a long time.
It is advisable during the work shift to stand up,
take a few steps, and then sit down again in the same position.
Vibrations are other risk factors
that may certainly cause backache.
All the means of transport and equipment existing at the mill
could be harmful in this regard.
National and international standards provide guidelines for exposure
to vibrations, which can result in a real professional disease.
Such means of transport, existing at Tenaris’ facilities,
appropriately buffer such vibrations.
However, we need to consider the risk factors
that may be caused by the worker himself,
who should not operate at high speed
in an area full of potholes.
Prevention begins with information.
Respect for current standards and the correction of bad habits
are the only ways towards success.
