Many people often ask me what Multimedia is.
The traditional definition of Multimedia is an integration of video, graphics, audio and text, in a digital format with some use of a computer chip.
That’s what multimedia is.
We all use multimedia every single day of our lives.
What do students learn in Multimedia?
They learn all kinds of things.
They learn software skills.
They learn editing skills.
They learn audio skills.
A lot of students take audio ProTools.
A lot of students either Final Cut or AVID.
They learn Photoshop.
They learn Flash.
They learn streaming media.
They learn compression.
They learn action script,
as well as research skills,
knowing about history,
media literacy.
It’s about a lot of things.
You become more of a generalist than a specialist.
But the truth of the matter is, when you graduate, you are not going to walk out of this university
and get a job as an editor on a major motion picture.
You need to walk out of this university with skills and knowledge so you can work as a PA or an assistant.
And then it’s your attitude and what you bring and the inquisitive you bring to the job.
One of the things that’s really important to understand about multimedia is that it’s not just entertainment.
It’s every potential job that exists.
Students have gone into corporate world.
They have gone into entertainment world.
They have gone into every industry you can imagine.
First of all, students learn how to create websites.
There isn’t any corporation that doesn’t have a website.
Secondly students are learning to work in the entertainment field by doing special effects.
Now we have students doing streaming media.
Corporations are doing streaming media.
A number of students have ended up working in the corporate public relations and corporate communications department.
I have students working at music industry.
I have students working at the studios, both for film and TV.
I have students working in the world of print.
I have students working in the area of tourism.
There isn’t an area that students don’t work in.
The other thing that you should do, if you are looking at jobs, is do research.
Research is the basis for everything we do, because if you’re going to go into multimedia, no matter what you are going into,
you are always going have to be able to research what you are doing.
You have to research the new software.
You have to learn the new software.
You have to learn, you have to research what are the best computers to buy.
You have to research how to do things.
Look at all this material and see where you really want to go.
Because sometimes the best jobs are jobs that we never hear about.
