Welcome to the Docpods Podiatrists Review and today we'll be discussing ingrown nails
or as they're more technically known, onychocryptosis.
A typical ingrown nail will usually affect the first toe and will present as a painful
red either medial or lateral sulcus of the first toe.
Initially there will be mild discomfort as the nail impacts on the skin. However, as
the nail grows it penetrates deeper and deeper into the flesh surrounding the nail causing
pain and infection.
You can see from our image here that the nail has affected the lateral sulcus of the first
toe but in reality an ingrown toenail can affect any toe.
There are many predisposing factors to ingrown nails such as improper cutting technique,
hyperhydrosis in the feet, incorrectly fitting shoes or also trauma that has caused the nail
to grow incorrectly.
