so i knows the third time I've talked about arm
this whole idea o.o poop the school to Prison Pipeline but i wanna talk to
about it
one more time mo probably about could become more times but
I want to talk about how this would intersect I think a lot of people think
this is just the black brown issue
that's just not true how intersect the lottery other policies and social issues
until that face our country
arm but let's just do a little bit research are
into you know how we got here right
so the department the youth problem Education's Office of Civil Rights
indicated that black students can becomes too eighty percent of the
population
but they come for 46 percent those are suspended more than once
sup I said to myself
itself if we
african-american men and boys are boys only make up
18 percent of total makeup 18 growth do
bigger eighty percent of the school population but represents 42 percent of
those have spent more than once
we might have a problem to have why we have a caller hand and it is from
systemic
can this problem is this problem only in a vacuum
or is there a larger broader conversation that we need to have
about what this policy means to you
social skills and beyond that middle-class and working-class families
so we dug a little deeper get the PowerShell and we found
that forty percent up students expelled from the you from the US school
each year are black right seventy percent of students involved in school
arrest
or referred to law enforcement are black or Latino african-american
and black sedans are three-and-a-half times more likely to get to spend their
white counterparts
one more step it up with you and black and Latina sons are twice
as likely to not graduate high school
as whites are now add to that
sixty eight-percent up all-male
in the federal prison systems do not have the follow-up
so I thought to myself went to my nose I know
I said self
almost 30 percent of those who go to prison don't have a diploma
if they have the PLO would they be in prison
question so
I thought about it a bit more and I said if there was
if there was a situation where they saw hope
outside love their quarter current the current school to Prison Pipeline
there in would there be in with their indeed be a school to Prison Pipeline
and anther to both those questions
are no nooo right the student had
a poem in we are you know the facts we know that the fight we know the numbers
behind that
student to the hospital home are more likely to get employed to the college
degree are beginning a million dollars more
but only with a high school degree so
these the school to Prison Pipeline
intersected way that we just don't think it intersects right
look at the statistics so are black men and boys
a black boy the particular are seventy per set
above the students involved in school wrestler african-american boys so you
ask yourself
where are the positive role models in the community and
the answer that question a lot of those other room while doing this because they
represent the sixty-eight percent
up individuals currently in prison without high school degrees so we've
done over the over the course of time
in this country we have beat down
and we have pressed down we have broken the backs
a black man and latino men so they can be role models in their community
to make sure that their kids don't become part that if you ate 68 percent
almost 70 percent all individuals
who become part of a prison without high school diplomas so
what we need to do is have a conversation with ourselves but how we
fix this
and that is where the insects now it comes and is a couple places
where I i wanna talk where want to break down the want to talk about it for a
second
the first place is proper funding for education
who continue to see is this i do.
where african-american and Latino students are labeled as being a bad
behavior disorder or they have a fundamental owners that's why the Act up
that we have behavioral problems and the teachers spend so much time ticking
toward the test
then they do actually business students reading writing and writing
reading writing and arithmetic
that we have a problem so we need to do with me the ball
our education system to actually teach people
the skills they need to be successful adult teaching you how to take a test
is not teach you how to BS a successful adult
teaching you how to take a test just that teaching you how to take a test
those skills
don't Basu themselves to the outside world
you can learn how to take a test and walk into a college class and write a 20
page paper
on you know too cold inductive reasoning
you can't do that because you don't have the skills
%uh reading writing arithmetic inductive reasoning when you're taught how to
bubble in the lines
and how to answer ABC or D so we changed
education three-fourths on more on how we create and we we we
nurture the whole stupid
right including the family now with a lot of folks out there who believe in
the specially with education reform
society community like and reform and perform and perform
and you listen to them talk other number one mention
the family or the student or more importantly
the community they believe they'll begin teaching kids how to take a test
they're gonna solve all the worlds problems that's just not true
you've got to start at home another one teacher is apparent
and the parents not there the number to me to be the community all we need to do
to solve our school to Prison Pipeline beyond legislatively breaking down from
these crazy policy the force is just the two attacks
that forced people that you counsel you out to suspend you because
they don't want to take the test you to bring the scores down or
a situation where you're given a min 20 that you're labeled they get more money
for you and your test was no matter
we need to criticism in which were enriching families were enriching
students
and we're in reaching the entire community now
earlier so I talk a whole idea of raising the minimum wage
and this is how this not intersect with the school to Prison Pipeline if these
mothers and fathers who are at home
were able to make a living wage lower without working multiple jobs
they be able to be home to be parents to be better parents to be more involved it
will home because they're working three jobs were McDonald
to Burger King the Taco Bell to the movie theater to maybe ross the maybe
Marshall
all making minimum wage they don't have the ability to enrich their children
themselves Lee depend upon the school system
to rate their children go to school for the own teaching you on how to test go
to the problem that we have in this country
we me to make sure that parents our home
parenting and the way we do that America is by raising the minimum wage allow
these parents to have
a living wage they can be a whole living what their children and teaching them
enriching their lives and supporting the evidence supporting their lives when
they get to school
their regular their able to learn and this caller that eating a test
with four TD basic mathematics basic reading
basic arithmetic basic inducted inductive reasoning that it would make
a stellar student not because then before long the F cat with a DT cast for
the Masters a test
it's about can you read can you write
pain or predict do you have inductive reasoning
to put up with you on this so raise the minimum wage
we raise the minimum wage we're a these families out of poverty
we raise them so they have educational options in that the mother a mother can
convey home
a mother can be home Republican be home to help a child with the homework
a father can be home her mother come home to help a child read read a book
them for they go to bed
they can read together they can grow to getting good museums together
when you allow them the assets to do that you solve the problem I guarantee
you this:
that 70 percent number also interested in school the rest
will go down I guarantee you the number although our pres our total prison
population will go down
and beyond the total for the population to go down what you also
by the be more and more Latino brown and black men
that have actual high school diploma that have a chance to go to college
there
