in order to do the brush beard project, we're gonna actually break it up into a
couple of different sections the first section we're going to do create the
mustache
to get started let's go to file
and create a new document
and for this one let's make sure our art board is set to one
the size is going to be letter
which is eight and a half by eleven
for orientation let's make sure that it's on landscape by clicking this
button
when we click it you'll notice that our width becomes eleven inches and our heighth
becomes eight and a half inches
everything else can remain the same and let'*** ok
so we've got our new artboard
that's in landscape mode
the first thing we need to do is to create our own brush
in order to do this, I'm going to select our polygon tool
and we're going to create a triangle, so I'm gonna click once
and that'll bring up my polygon options box
let's set our radius to half of an inch
and set the number of sides to three
and hit okay
and we've got a little triangle
now we're actually gonna create three different types of triangles but for
this first one
let's create a light-colored triangle, so we're gonna choose a fill color
and you can make it any color you want but i will make this one light blue
hit okay
and let's set our stroke color
excuse me
to none
so just adding a fill color
the next thing we need to do is make this triangle taller than it is wide
to do that we're gonna select our selection tool
you see we've got our bounding box and when I click and drag the top one
it'll make our
triangle much taller
than it is wide
i said we need three of these so let's quickly copy two more of them
so with it selected, I'm gonna hold down my option key
and click and drag you can see it got my double arrows so when I let go
i've created one copy and when i do it again
got another copy again i held down my option key when I click and drag
this middle one, let's create a middle value of blue
that's good
I'm gonna select this final one and create a dark blue
and hit ok
so now we've got three different triangles light medium and dark
the next thing i want to do is to get my triangles a darkside on the right
hand side
and we want to do this for each and every one of them so what i'm going to
do with this first one is first select it
and then go to edit
and copy
and then go to edit
and paste in front
this is going to paste a copy of this triangle right on top of the other one
that i move it you can see that we actually have a copy of the it right
on top it it
with it selected let's make this one slightly darker shade
than our original color
we'll hit okay
the next thing we'll do is select our white arrow, our direct selection tool
and click on this very bottom lefthand corner point
if i click and drag I'm gonna drive it to the right
and when i let go
you can see now that my triangle has the darker shaded side
on the right hand side
so now we have three different shapes
that we can use to make brushes from
so to start making a brush first let's open up our brushes palette. to do that
we're going to go to window
and down to brushes
and you can see it pops open
next
with our selection tool selected our black arrow
let's highlight this first
triangle object
with it selected, make sure both your light and dark sides are selected
go to your brushes pallet and click on the new brush button down at the bottom
right hand side of the pallet
when you click on it, it'll give you a popup dialog box
and we're going to create a new art brush
so quickly on the one in the middle
hit okay
and these are the options to create an art brush, we're not gonna change them
up much for this project
so matter of fact we're gonna keep all these options the same
except for one change we're going to change the direction
to the up arrow
so we want to make sure that our arrow is gonna be facing upward when we
paint who want to start at the end, at the tapered tip
everything else about this can remain the same
let'*** okay
so now we have three different brushes of three different values to choose from
to start making our beard and mustache
once we've got those created we can actually get rid of
these triangles that we've created by selecting them and hitting delete
and let's start making a mustache
lets choose our brush tool
and make sure that our fill color is set to none
and don't worry about the color of your stroke
the first one we're gonna choose is our dark
whisker that we created
so clicking on this because we got it selected, we got our brush tool
we're gonna paint some whiskers from the center of our document outward
so starting in the center click
and drag
you can give it a little bit of a curve
after i make each whisker, I like to deselect it so I'm gonna hit shift command a, and it
deselects
click and drag out
so i've got whiskers going from both sides
just add on as many as you want
try to keep all your whiskers contained within
your document
once you're satisfied with the mustache that you've created we need to
create a cut-out
where our nose will go
in order to do this let's go to our shapes and choose our ellipse tool
let's set our fill color
to white
and our stroke color
to none
and in the center
let's create a perfect circle. I'm holding down my shift key, clicking and dragging
it doesn't have to be too big
that'll be big enough
and we can move it towards the center to cover-up
beginning points of our mustache
and there, you've created a mustache
once it's done
you can go to file
down to print
and print it off on the color printer
the next thing we need to do is to create the beard portion of this project
in order to do this we'll need to create a new document itself so let's go to
file
and down to new
and it'll bring up our new document box
we still want the size to be letter eight-and-a-half by eleven with one
artboard
but let's change our orientation back to portrait, so we're gonna click on this first one making
the width eight-and-a-half and height eleven
clicking ok
we're going to do the same thing, this time creating a bottom portion of our
beard
and drawn from the top of our page downward
but notice in our brushes palette that we no longer have the brushes that we
were working with
that's because in adobe illustrator it saves all of the brushes and whichever
document he first created since we created a new document
those new brushes we created weren't saved
so let's go back to our mustache document
and with our selection tool
let's select
some of these lines
we can then go to edit
and copy
with them copied we can go to our new document the one that's portrait
and go to edit
and paste
and they'll be pasted into this document now look at our brushes palette you can
see
that our new brushes we created has been added
to our selections
let's clear off
our artboard
and with them gone we still have our brushes in there and we can continue to
paint a beard
so let's choose our brush tool
starting off again with the darker whiskers we're gonna paint from the top
center moving down the page so topped
moving down
and we're just going to fill out
the beard just as we did with the mustache
you can make it as fluffy
or as curly as you want
with our beard created the last thing we need to create is some lips and a mouth
in order to attach it to
to do this let's use our ellipse tool
and set our fill color to the color of our lips that are dark red so I'm gonna double
click on the fill
and choose a darkish kind of red
and set our stroke
to null
and let's create
an oval
and i need to create a specific size circle, so I'm gonna click once
to get my lips options
and i want to create a lips that's three inches wide
and six inches tall
hit okay
mess we're going to move this ellips to the top
of our document
remember anything that's off of the art board won't be printed so everything
that's below this will be ok it's all safe
so let's move it till about half of our ellipse is on our artboard
next thing we need to do is to create a black
circle on top
for the mouth
so I'm going to with our ellipse selected, go to edit
and copy
and then we're going to pasted in front
so we've got our ellipse on top of here with it selected, let's change its color to
black
and finally we're going to adjust the
height of this ellipse by clicking the very bottom
piece and moving it up
so we've created a slightly shorter circle
and we have our red lips down at the bottom
with the black mouth in the center
the final part will be to add some teeth to the center of our mouths so with our
ellipse tool let's change our color to white
and draw off about four different teeth
and the center
of our mouth
so you can make in different sizes you can move them around
it's your mask
there
now with that created you can go to file and print
and print this off on the color printer
noticed that when it prints, this is what it's gonna look like the top half isn't
going to be printed
just from the teeth down
to put together the project
you'll need to print off each section of the mask
you'll also need popsicle stick
some tape
and you'll need some scissors
cut out each section of the mask carefully
then flip it over and apply a piece of tape to each section
taping it to the popsicle stick
once you've gotten this project put together, the last thing i want you to do is to
take a picture of yourself with your mask
so let's minimize illustrator and go to our desktop
and let's find our macintosh hd icon which is usually in the top right-hand
corner of your screen
double click to open it up
and find the applications folder
double-click to open it
and in our applications folder this is where all of the different programs are
usually stored on your macintosh computer
find one that's called
photo booth
and double click to open it up
when you launch this program it'll turn on your computer's webcam so give us
a wave
take your completed project and hold it up
and then locate the red button in the center of the window
when you click it it'll give you at three second countdown and take your
picture
it actually added to a list of pictures so you can take as many as you want
from there you can click through the different types of pictures you've taken
and choose the best one that you most like
when you find a picture that you want to print off and go to file
and down to print
and print it to the color printer
