I can't believe I just got a jury summons. Do I have to go to jury duty?
You risk a contempt of court ruling if you try to squirm your way out.
Aren't there legitimate ways to get out of jury duty?
If you are taking care of a child under the age of six, you can request an exemption.
If you are scheduled to go on business travel, you can get out of it.
I am booking a flight ASAP.
It has to be for business, and if the travel is your excuse, they'll give you a makeup
day.
I don't want to spend all day in a court room and get less than a lousy T-shirt.
Think of all the stupid court rulings that come out, from people who got millions for
lung cancer despite always knowing it caused cancer to the jury that used an ouija board
to decide.
It could be worse, since they could have been playing Soduku during the trial.
One jury got in trouble for a Soduku tournament during the trial, though a couple of judges
have been whacked for playing Solitaire during proceedings.
So you think I should go because there are too many smart people getting out of jury
duty, instead of siting on the jury.
Yeah, but if you really want to get out of it, you could argue you have a medical condition
that prevents you from going.
Like being blind.
No, because the blind can hear the case. I mean on bed rest during pregnancy.
First I'd have to get pregnant.
Or you could go to the jury trial and answer all the questions in ways that would make
the defense attorney throw you out.
How do you do that?
State that you are absolutely in favor of the death penalty, harsh sentences, life in
jail for repeat offenders. The prosecutors love that, but the defense will kick you out
of the jury pool.
Sounds like you're experienced.
If you show up and get kicked out of the jury pool, you're home by noon and they won't call
you up again for years.
