The viewer asks, "what are some of the long term effects of kids being bullied?" Bullying
behavior has been around as long as time; however, it used to be that it took place
normally at school, so that once the child left school, they could go home and be in
a safe place. Now, with technology and social media, they could be bullied 24/7, and this
can cause a lot of damage. Some recent, long term studies have shown that the person being
bullied has long term, damaging effects. They have found that men, who were bullied throughout
childhood and in their teenage years, were more likely to be arrested and convicted and
placed in a prison than those who were not bullied. Women seem to be particularly vulnerable
to being bullied, as they often turn to drugs and alcohol as a way to cope. And, interestingly
enough, they have found that women, who were bullied throughout childhood and into adulthood,
tend to be arrested, convicted and placed in prison more often than men who had been
bullied throughout their childhood and adulthood. Certainly, more research is needed on the
long term effects, but it's clear that any kind of bullying can be damaging. Be sure
that you're having frequent conversations with your children, both about being bullied
as well as being the bully. Work with your school programs on their anti-bullying activities,
and become and active participant. Thanks for your question.
