[upbeat bouncy instrumental introduction]
(Monica): Hi, I’m Monica and welcome to Clearly the Best
Stamping with Close To My Heart. (Kristine): And I’m Kristine and today’s episode is called
“The Stamp behind the Mask.” It sounds like a blockbuster and (Monica): Ooh.
it is, in stamping techniques that is. We’re gonna teach you (Monica): (Laughs)
(Kristine): a little bit about masking. Ready to go? (Monica): Yes, we are. I’m ready to go.
(Kristine): All right! Let’s see it. So cute. (Monica): You see this sentiment right on top?
(Kristine): Yeah, sure. Great. Show us how. (Monica): Well, I made that using masking.
(Monica): So I got the stamp set here, Words of Comfort Occasions,
and you can see the sentiment is straight across. (Kristine): Yeah, it’s a long sentence.
(Monica): So how in the world did I make that cute little cluster? (Kristine): I know you’re gonna show us how.
(Monica): Yep. So you’re gonna have to make sure you’ve got
your sticky notes because that’s gonna help me make my mask and
I’ve got my Colonial White ink here and it’s a pigment ink, so
it’s pretty moist and wet because I’m gonna be using our (Kristine): Okay...
(Monica): our chalkboard paper. So I’m gonna get my sticky note. (Kristine): Oh, great. Okay.
(Monica): I’m gonna cover all the words here, except for (Kristine): Except “our.”
(Monica): Just except “our” (Kristine): ...is showing
(Monica): And then I’m gonna press down here and get my ink and (Kristine): just lightly, huh.
you can see it looks like it’s got a lot of coverage (Kristine): Yes. So...
(Monica): Make sure to take off that sticky note (Kristine): Gotcha.
(Monica): That’s tricky for me sometimes. And then I’m gonna (Kristine): Okay.
stamp it sideways here. There we go. Beautiful. So, and I do that
again over here with, now I’m gonna put a mask, see I’ve got
the luxury of having multiples. (Kristine): You do. That’s the magic of television.
(Monica): You want to make sure you clean off your stamp sets (Kristine): Sure.
with every word that you go with. So I don’t have to do that to (Kristine): Sure.
(Monica): save time, and I’ve got another sticky note here. (Kristine): Oh, now you’re just covering up everything but the word “hearts.”
(Monica): Yep. Everything but the word “hearts.” (Kristine): Okay.
(Monica): So I’m gonna ink that word...(Laughs) (Kristine): It looks silly but it’s working. (whisper) It’s working!
(Monica): I’m gonna peel off those and now I’ve just got the word
“Hearts” and I’m just going ahead and stamp that right there. (Kristine): Nice.
(Monica): So there. You can see it beginning there, and so, and (Kristine): Oh, cool.
(Monica): and I’ll do that you know, I can keep doing that with
the rest of them. (Kristine): So you’re really just breaking the sentiment down
into its pieces by covering it up...with those sticky notes (Monica): Yep. And you can see here
(Monica): that’s what it would look like. And so you can see all (Kristine): Awesome. Easy.
(Monica): the words broken out by using a sticky note. (Kristine): So really, you can make any sentiment fit any space
(Monica): You really could. (Kristine): just by masking it off. That’s cool. Well, I’ve got
some other pieces, can I show some of those, too? So this piece (Monica): Okay, great. Please.
(Kristine): right here, this lovely card “Sending You Happy
Thoughts”: very similar. What we’ve done here is, I’ve mixed two
I’ve just masked off the different areas and done it this way. (Monica): Great value. Yep.
one stamp image and the “sending you” is from something else. (Monica): Right and using two different inks.
(Kristine): Yeah, totally. So you can use two different inks
and put completely disparate sentiments together. (Monica): I like this card. I love this card.
(Kristine): Yeah, I do too. Now here, this one, “Music Soothes—
soothes the, the Soul” — that’s hard for me to say for some
reason but it’s really easy to do. This is actually one sentiment (Monica): (Laughs) Right.
(Kristine): but through masking, I can do it in two different
colors. So you can see that I’ve both got my light pigment ink
and then I’ve got my darker grey ink. (Monica): Great.
(Kristine): And so that’s just one stamp. (Monica): And it looks like two totally different stamps.
(Kristine): Yeah, but it isn’t. It’s the same stamp set,
(Kristine): Now this one is perhaps one of my most favorite
because it uses some non-traditional masking. Everything you’ve (Monica): Okay.
(Kristine): showed us in some of these pieces focus on stamp
masking, but you can use a mask for a lot of different things.
So first what I did, is cut a circle, any size is going to work
fine just depending on your artwork piece. Cut a circle, you
can use our Cricut® Collections to cut a circle with or any
other thing that you’ve got a template with to make a circle.
And then that becomes my mask. So place the circle down here and
then you can see where I have spritzed some additional ink
around. It almost works as a resist. And before I removed the
circle I also used it to make it as my stitching guide. (Monica): Right. Great.
(Kristine): So I created some really fun pieces here to add
some visual interest to this page all by using a mask that I
just peel off and discard. (Monica): Perfect. Well I do have a couple more samples over here
(Kristine): Oh, great. (Monica): I’ve got these cute little sticks you can see here.
And this is actually one image and by doing a circle mask to (Kristine): Right.
(Monica): cover up the center part. Exactly. I put that down (Kristine): Like that inside of that pirouette.
(Monica): and then I stamped the Slate color. Then I peel that
off, I ink up my stamp again in Ruby this time and then with the
baby wipe, I just clean off all the edges to get the center part.
(Kristine): Great, so you don’t have any leftover spilling. Aah. (Monica): All right, now this is the “wowie.” Woo hoo! Okay —
(Kristine): This is the Stamp behind the Mask? (Monica): Yes! It really is. So you see the background, these
really cute pennants? I did that with the masking technique. (Kristine): Yeah!
(Monica): So I’ve used our Art Philosophy Cricut® cartridge and
here you can see that I’ve put in this image. And then you hit (Kristine): Oh, yeah.
(Monica): auto fill so that the whole page comes out with this (Kristine): Cuts with those little triangular pennants.
(Monica): pennant. Yep. Then you want to carefully take off
the negative space with your spatula. Um, actually you’re going
to mount it first, you’re gonna mount it on your base. (Kristine): Oh, okay.
(Monica): So here you go. Here’s the base mounted. You can see
that it’s got the Slate cardstock on the back. (Kristine): Oh, okay. Gotcha. On the back of your paper.
(Monica): Once you’ve got in on your base and then you’re going
to take your spatula to remove the negative space. (Kristine): Okay, so just the little triangle pennants are left.
(Monica): And you want to be careful about, because you want
to keep the triangle pennants on the paper. And you want to make
sure you use removable adhesive. And so... (Kristine): Well, for sure. So it’s really kind of the
same technique as this but a lot higher level. Very nice. (Monica): Yep. Look how fun this looks? Isn’t that so cool?
And so with the spritzer then we were able to get that shadow
effect, you know the layering effect. And then you peel off
the pennants and this is the final result. (Kristine): Very cool. So it’s also masking, even though you
didn’t use a stamp set. You used an ink technique. (Monica): That’s right. Yep.
(Kristine): Well that’s great. These are some really fun
different ideas that you can use making masks of your own and
finding out what’s behind them. If you’d like to learn a little
bit more about this technique and other great products from
