Emerging Student Leaders began about four years ago when we realized we had a lot of
wonderful student leaders coming into the university
from leadership positions in high school youth groups in high schools and they had to wait
until their sophomore year here to the to get involved in leadership. Our motto in ESL
is learn serve grow and those three words govern everything that we do from our weekly
meetings to our high school leadership conference that we plan and pull off at the end of each year and
then we have the students engage in service on campus and off-campus and through those two things
that serves as the foundation for their growth as Christian leaders both here at Trinity
and beyond
so when you first come to college as a freshman you're really scared you don't know what friends you're gonna
have, if you're gonna be going to the library everyday you don't know what's going to be going on
as your college years approach and what the ESL program does is it introduces you to about
fifteen to twenty other freshman who are in the same predicament who are scared and nervous
and it gives you a sense of community with other students um...
be apart of the same organization and be
excited for the same things of leadership with a christian focus we understand that
a student leader needs to have certain character qualities as well as skills and so
there is a focus on spiritual formation
we spend time in prayer, we spend
time in scriptures, looking at how Jesus led
we understand that the outward acts of leadership are based on the the foundation
of the inner person and so spiritual formation is foundational for Christian leadership and
that's something that we focus on in ESL
I can see myself using skills I took from ESL
on the football field already
I'm speaking up and I'm encouraging others to work harder
and really helping them be better at their sport and better at being a man and Christ follower
leading that group to center their focus on who Christ is really are the
skills I've learned from this group
our hope is that
once a student graduates from the ESL program they're equipped
to make a difference in other leadership positions both at Trinity and off-campus
when they graduate from Trinity we're hoping that the skills that they learned
the confidence that they gained and the knowledge of what Christian leadership looks like
carries with them throughout their lives
I chose to be a part of the ESL program here at Trinity
because it was one of the very first things I was introduced to. I didn't have a clue
that i was going to be a part of ESL until two weeks before school started and so it was
a fast transition right away as soon as I received email saying I was accepted into ESL
i was so excited because I knew that the basis of ESL was going to be leadership
on-campus, in a leadership environment and that was important to me because I value
leadership skills and being able to learn how to be christian leader is I think important
for going into the real work force after college so being apart of ESL
I joined it and wasn't expecting everything that I got out of it. It's been a great um... experience
and it's far exceeded my expectations after your accepted as a student I encourage you
to apply to the ESL program
you'll get an email and be encouraged to fill out an online application
uh... we ask such questions as: What is your leadership involvement currently?
What do you understand Christian leadership to be? And, what are some areas that you would
like to grow in
as a christian leader? So I courage you to check that out
and fill out that applications today
