My name is Dan. My surname is van der Westhuizen. I am involved with a program in exercise rehabilitation
at Victoria University. I am teaching there and I’m doing a bit of research and helping
with the learning in the workplace opportunities of the students when they go out for clinical
placements. It’s quite marvellous, many students who come here are starting with post
grad programs are coming from undergraduate courses. Some of them are from exercise science,
some of them are not, some of them are from other allied health professions. The fact
that we are in a service delivery and helping profession, gives us the opportunity to contribute
to other people’s lives. When you work with a person who’s got a heart attack before,
who underwent coronary artery bypass graft surgery and he comes back to you after about
twelve or sixteen weeks and he’s telling you, ‘you know what, I’ve never ever been
in my life so fit as I am now’. That feels that you really contribute to people’s life
and that really makes you passionate. And that feels like, that is really what you want
to do.
