- 4th century B.C.
Philosophy is blooming.
The Parthenon has already been erected.
The city-states are in conflict but they also flourish.
At Sikyon in the Peloponnese, near today's Kiato of Corinth, Lysippos is born.
He comes from a family of artisans.
His name rises from his parent's worship of the god Lysios Dionysos.
Still a child, he attends all-night rituals escorting the god's statue to the temple.
Lysippos created by using Bronze that expressed ideally the fit male body, the vigor and strength of athletes and heroes.
Most of his works, however...
- Reached our times through their copies on Marble, mostly made during the Roman Period.
The most important, however, is that although marble copies, they contain and confirm all the elements of his original bronze work.
Thus, their number and quality help us identify other works of Lysippos which are known by the descriptions of the ancient authors.
- Our knowledge on Lysippos seems confusing and vague like THIS shot that looks like bronze.
Ancient writers, though, have referred often, and some of them in great detail, to his work.
Thus, our familiarity with Lysippos results, or in some ways is guessed, from the combination of different and relative factors.
So, we have to study his works if we ever wish to trace the genius that created them.
- One such footprint is found in Kairόs. A work of art...
...that captures the philosophic and the artistic 'credo' of the sculptor.
- Kairόs for the ancient Greeks meant....OPPORTUNITY.
Lysippos depicts the Spirit of Opportunity as a naked young man...
...with his knees bent, in motion, and wings on his ankles.
The top of his head is shaved, bare.
His remaining hair falling onto the side and front.
He runs holding in his outstretched hand scales balanced on a razor's edge.
Showing how easy it is...
...for things to change, for the balance to be disturbed.
With the other hand he influences the equilibrium.
- The original was a bronze statue.
Sources tell us that Kairόs was placed in front of Lysippos' house so as to address his message to the passing people.
