What's the matter? I'm a failure.
My goal setting isn't working. Before you admit defeat, let's see what you
could do differently. Stay tuned to find out how you can achieve
all of your goals. Cindy and Randall here with Treating-Fibromyalgia.com
helping you live a healthier more fulfilling life.
In this video we'll explain why goal setting often results in failure & what you could
do differently that'll help you achieve your desired outcome.
We've been told that the surest and quickest way to achieving what we desire in life is
to set goals. By setting goals we're better capable of focusing
our energy & time on those steps necessary to accomplish them.
But, why is it that so many well-intentioned people who have set goals fail to hit the
mark? Back in the 80's, a common Western business
approach to goal setting was the acronym S.M.A.R.T. Many lifestyle coaches and self-improvement
gurus and motivational speakers got onto the band wagon and began touting the benefits
of setting SMART goals. This simple, easy-to-remember acronym has
helped many get started with the goal planning process.
So, what are SMART goals? I love Don Morgan's explanation for setting
SMART goals. Don's the co-founder of Business Networking
International (BNI) And he would say that:
The mind is better able to picture the goal if you are highly specific in your written
description of it. To evaluate progress along the way and to
know when you arrive, your goal must be measurable. Keep a positive outlook about getting to your
goal by making it achievable. You will develop increased self-confidence
and positive self esteem if your goals are realistic.
Finally, your goal must be completed by a specified time.
No one benefits by working toward a destination that never arrives.
Where we differ in Don's opinion about implementing SMART goals, as being a sure way to success,
is that it doesn't take into consideration a fundamental factor.
That key factor is the importance that you place on how you're going to create new habits
that are more supportive of your goals. Barbara Somervill's book The Best Guide to
Success, so aptly puts it. In order to be more successful at whatever
endeavor you pursue she believes you should actively work to:
Break long-standing, defeating habits, develop a pattern of small successes, recognize milestones
and create new, life-fulfilling habits. Without creating supportive habits that allow
you to work towards accomplishing your goals you're more than likely doomed to failure.
It's habit change that is the missing ingredient in many goal-setting exercises.
No matter how well-intentioned you are without taking action to gradually change your current
routines so as to allow you the opportunity to realize your goals you'll struggle with
the process. A case in point is the typical New Year's
resolution that many of us set each year. Often these resolutions come in the form of
a particular health benefit whether it's through healthier eating or physical activity.
Although you may set SMART goals that'll move you in the right direction without focusing
on changing your current behaviors and adopting new ones you'll eventually wind up continuing
on the same path. Martin Grunburg author of The Habit Factor
is a strong believer in aligning your habit change process with your goal setting.
In his book, he uses the acronym HAPPY, to create that link.
To be more successful, your Habit change process needs to be Aligned with your goal.
Those supportive habits that you establish should have a Purpose, being important and
related to your goal that focuses on a Positive outcome or change.
And finally, like Barbara Somervill you need to celebrate any progress with a great big
"YES". Treat or reward yourself when you reach a
milestone. If you're struggling with following through
with your goals consider starting with the habit change process first.
Take a moment to analyze which small changes you could make that would move you closer
to your desired outcome. These small changes to your current habits
and routines could be the missing link as to why you're unable to hit the mark in realizing
some of your goals. Looking for some additional insight and advice
