The Waikato based tribe of Ngati Koroki-Kahukura
signed its $15 million Treaty settlement today.
The deal compensates the tribe for the loss of its lands
and provides commercial redress
and arrangements over parts of the Waikato River.
Potaka Maipi has more.
The challenges remain for Ngati Koroki-Kahukura
despite the Treaty settlement.
This is the beginning.
There's a lot of work ahead
for the next 12 months
before it becomes law.
The settlement includes land taken
and the loss of a village that was at Lake Karapiro.
Ngati Koroki-Kahukura had a lot of land back in the days,
but at the sacking of Waikato
they were taken from the iwi and distributed out to soldiers.
Now today 19 significant sites have been returned to us.
But not all are in tune with the idea of Ngati Koroki-Kahukura
being the guardians of their ancestral mountain, Maungatautari.
A number of farmers are against it.
There are people in this area
that say Maori shouldn't have rights over Maungatautari.
Ngati Haua also joined in with Ngati Koroki-Kahukura to assist them
on their path of negotiation with the Crown.
