I have a research project and i want to use the Digital Content Portal, but I'm not sure how to start.
Can you help me? I'd be happy to help you!
What we're going to do is make sure that we get logged onto the DCP
How do I get my username and password ?You're going get it from your teacher...
There's a special student username and password just for your school
and remember you've got plenty of help in the DTP
when you want to know how to use each of the databases
EBSCO,Worldbook, eBrary and ProQuest
just click on the get help
button and you'll see the tutorials listed there
And remember
when you're doing research you always need to cite your sources
you have to make sure that you write down title, author, publication and website address
in order to keep track at your resources
I've used that Worldbook citation builder - it's super helpful and does the work for me.
Where do I find that? You find it in Worldbook Student or Worldbook Advanced
and you just click on citation builder.
So how do you get started researching?
and, you might be wondering why do we have to do it in the first place?
Well, we know that in this age of information,
we're all going to do research. So click on Workbook student and go to
How to do Research. You can also
under my research open an account where you can save
all the great things that you find on the DCP
What's Ebrary? On Ebrary there are full text books on all kinds of subjects
thousands and thousands of books, so when you're starting to do your project
you want to be able to find resources that are going help you
so it's a great place to search when you're looking for actual quotes from
authors and full books that have been written on your topic
I remember my teacher put some of those books on my iPad and I could read them there
Yes you can download them easily
You may want to check out to Proquest Discoverer
You want to think about what's the purpose and your project or paper
Who will the audience be? In ProQuest Discoverer
You've got an animated avatar to help you get started
Just click on ProQuest Discoverer and then click on
"I Think Tudor" how to do research That sounds like fun!
You'll jump into EBSCO Host when you want to look for periodicals, journals
magazines and newspapers if you type it
If you type in the search bar "Writing a Research Paper"
three articles immediately appear
and you can check out EBSCO with any other kind of topic
you will also want to open a my EBSCO host account by clicking "Sign In"
to save your own research journal and magazine articles
you can see where it's right there press the top bar very easy to do.
I think my Mom and Dad would like to
have EBSCO Host as well. I think that would help them help me with my research
Great idea! Do you know about booleans? Booleans?
I've never even heard of that! Booleans help you do search terms by
refining the kinds of things that you look at that
The three most common ones are:
the words AND, OR and NOT
So you can look at the chart here
and see the distinction between each of them. If you want to watch a
quick video that shows you what it's like to use Booleans
go to the YouTube link on this page and see in Ninjas versus Pirates
Oh, that sounds scary!
don't forget you've got video resources
when you're going to start researching and you want to learn
something more about the topic
California Streaming has over 12,000
educational videos, and for example if you're
doing some research on volcanoes there are 60 videos available
like this one in the picture below from National Geographic
Hey is Bill Nye the Science Guy on there? He certainly is! And he looks great.
I love Bill Nye!
So the most important thing about doing research
is to plan ahead. When you're writing a research paper it can be exciting,
rewarding and scary - so you want to make sure that you give yourself enough time
to do a great job. There's nine steps listed here
All of them to help you plan your time effectively
One of the most important is when you get end after reading your particular paper
or writing your paper get critical friend a teacher or
parent and to read and make corrections so that you have
another set of eyes on your paper
Sounds good! I gotta go! I've got to go get logged in to the DCP
Good luck with your research. I can't wait to see what you produce
