>>ELLIS: Veterans Day is a day of peace, really. It was originally started when- signed at
the end
of World War I. I think of this as a day of peace
rather than a day of war. It means everything
to us who are old veterans, especially of World War II.
>>ANDREWS: I think it’s always important every year to stop and pause to give thanks
and to remember the American citizens, men and women, who have served their country.
We often reflect on those that have died and that’s very, very important
and let’s not also forget those who have returned
home, some of them with terrible war injuries,
and they have to continue on with their lives and we need to support them.
Today with an all-volunteer army it’s easy for some
folks to think, ‘well somebody else is doing that for us’
but those “somebody elses” are our brothers and sisters and sons and daughters
and aunts and uncles and the sacrifices are great
and we should never, ever forget that.
>>MASON: I’ve had relatives serve in World War II
and the Korean War, the Vietnam War,
I personally have served in the Gulf War and in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom
and Enduring Freedom, so uh, it’s a lot of
good memories that come with service
to our nation and of those family members that have served.
>>AMMONS: The whole eastern Kentucky region is very supportive of the men and women
who serve our nation and in this University, with its strategic goal to reach out to our
communities and support those communities and become regionally engaged,
it’s just a natural extension of what we do
in the region, we do here on campus.
>>MASON: Well Veterans Day to me is every day.
Not just November eleventh, today, but every day.
I personally make the choice to honor those that have come before me today,
being an active duty service member now gives me the opportunity today to go within
the Rowan County Veterans organization and those veterans that are here today,
and say thank you for leading the way, thank you for blazing the trail for me,
so that I can serve my country, and serve honorably.
And they have been a wonderful example,
not only to myself, but to our country, and one that we should all strive to achieve.
