In the beginning of videos 2012 when I started the
Triathlon's Road to Vegas. The chronicling of my journey
from couch potato to
World Championship competing triathlete
I had very few subscribers
very few views
the bulk of my views were coming from
video I put together as a first-time Ironman. and since then
I have almost 300 subscribers
I get questions from you guys on a regular basis. You're probably wondering
well what's next
Tat's a great question because
I like to push myself and I like to challenge myself
and that's something that I need to to maintain a healthy lifestyle
and also that something that I would like to be able to use
demonstrate to you guys that you can go beyond what you think you're capable of
doing
and the big question that people have for me is "Will you try for Kona
to try to get into the world
championships?" and the answer is yes I am going to try but I'm just gonna try once
I'm going to compete in the Ironman Wisconsin next year
I'll still be competing in the M40-44
age group for for several years. And that will be
my one attempt to qualify for Kona. My main goal now
I main purpose now and main drive is to
qualify for the world championships for the ultraman
which is also held
in Kailua Kona, Hawai'i. The Ultraman is a three-day
triathlon. The first day is a 10,000 meter swim 6.2 miles
followed by a ninety-mile bike ride. second day is a 170
mile bike ride
and the third day is a double marathon and
your total time is then added all together for the three days and
that's what your
place is based off of. and the top people in the world
that finish in those events get to compete World Championship
in Kona. The races are held artificially is about 35 or 40 people
There's one in the UK, one in Florida, one in Canada
at this point. and in order to
participate in one of those events you have to have done an Ironman in the past 18 months
or some combination of events that prove that you can do that
my last Ironman was in 2011 and I would like to compete in Ultraman in 2015
so for 2014 I will be competing
and Ironman Wisconsin. if I qualify for Kona that's great
if I don't that's okay I will work towards
Ultraman. One of the things that
I really found and identified and Vegas highlighted for me
was the need to shed additional weight and even though I dropped from 240 to
200 pounds
there's probably another fifteen or twenty pounds
that's keeping me from really being fast
The hills. I did some rough physics
equations and the hills at Vegas
translate every 10 lbs to about a mile-per-hour
so what I would like to do
Get rid of my midsection here. Trim 15-20 pounds off of that
Be around 180-185 for Ironman Wisconsin
it's also very hilly course that'll
translate to about 1-2 mph on that course. and that will be about
the peak shape that I can be. I'll be 40 years old
competing in that. Channel my midlife crisis energy towards that
and then the reason for 2015 is that way all my children will have graduated
from high school so I'd like to push that back so I can really
spend time with them as they finish their last couple years of high school up
Right now I'm only training about 10-15 hours a week which is
which is quite doable. And with Ironman I'll probably go
15 maybe up to twenty-some so it's not too rough of a training schedule.
One of the things I like that challenge you guys with is first timers or
people may be getting their tri journey or multi-sport
journey is to find what you love, to find your goals are, to find what you
really want to do.
it could be a healthy lifestyle. if could be qualifying for a race. it could be completed a
distance
and try to work that in
it just, it takes a lot of time to build up your endurance
muscles and capability. seven years. I'm not a lifetime athlete.
15 years as an adult I spent obese
BMI 29-30. so
and I don't have an advantage of being a
you know college swimmer or college track runner and
cross country runner. and I i hit triathlon when I was 35 years old so
I can't ever compete
at the top levels but I will do the best that I can
and that's all you that should be trying to do too
you know help reduce the health care costs in the U.S.
extend your life make your quality of life better for you and your family your kids
be an example to others and an inspiration for others
