almost every american believes in the mantra personal responsibility
but do they act that way
it's easy to say that you're in favor of personal responsibility
but hard to say that if you get laid off well that's your problem
and the government should be no help you
but is that what personal responsibility really needs
if everyone agrees that you have to rely in southern not the government allied
only twenty one percent of americans say the recent gallup poll
but they're satisfied with with the way that things are going on in the united
states right now obviously a lot of more dissatisfied
are they blaming the government is that not taking personal responsibility
what i think charge of your own life
well that's what the t_-forty people are asking for quite
think it's always a little hard to tell with them
but which for little parties the really the party of responsibility
filled kate howard author of the death of common sense joins me now from
chicago
to help answer some or all made even all those questions
alright filled let me ask you are preferred care are good there were a
great time
first let me start by asking you what are you thinking personal
responsibilities to you
well i think that
most americans want to do it they just want to do the right thing
and that they'd take care and take taking yourself when you can
are making sensible judgments are made things happen
that ought to happen fulfilling a duty to jurors most most americans want to do
that
write notes everybody wants to do that i i don't know if i really don't know
anybody but
admitted to an arson attack in andrew's delayed especially the women have been
tried but let's talk about the role of government so what how does that play
into personal responsibility
are you less responsible of the government puts out
you know puts out the fire in your house agreeing to buy a house for design
diving into it
or are you know i think government as an important role to provide social
services that i think the government is a problem
because uh... as a unwittingly government has removed the conditions of
responsibility
so increasingly people don't feel free to take responsibility teacher for
example can't maintain order in the classroom for there's so much warned
iraq receipt became put her arm around a crying child
doctors wonder billions of dollars because
contest they don't think they're necessary because
they don't feel free to be responsible they don't trust the system of justice
the governor comes into office in new york state fires at night per cent of
the budget is pretty committed by
old laws in mandates that he can't do anything about
so now i think a cruise from two billion barrels a budget
now i hang on all that and that's all very good points i probably agree with
ninety percent of of what you say on that
but i think there's some really fundamental hard questions to answer for
example with social security before we had a
illa
we had people starving the streets of new in senior citizens
who you know i i don't think we want that i've you know you living of
attacking the cetera another
and what i want people to be responsible for themselves and
planned for the future of course i do so how do we balance that
i don't think that the argument here is over-regulation deregulation
social safety nets remit bruno social safety nets what's missing here in both
parties are missing us is americans no longer feel free to roll up their
sleeves roll up their sleeves and make things happen
and i think that serbs significant problem in our society it's possible
because the age of none of my life expectancies growing up so much that
maybe the responsible thing to do with the change for the interest social
security couple of years so that we can balance the budget but that doesn't have
anything to do with whether government should provide it
bridal and i would disagree with that idea they always have been a lot of his
own life is no money if you want to keep taxing the rich in an incredibly
historically low rate any taxes a couple points higher than they'd be plenty of
money
spot eliane that goes toward responsibility to how much do we have a
responsibility to our elemento
or is it exactly that everybody's on their own difficult you know there's a
lot of the house to live to i've got my own personal security or do we have some
communal responsibility to
of course we have communal responsibilities
but the most important thing that's missing in america today that no one it
any level of responsibility not the president who can't get
important environmental projects going for the takes ten years a review but not
the teacher in the classroom can roll up their sleeves to make decisions and
that's a significant crisis of responsibility there's no problem in
america who couldn't be soft if we don't sit down together and make choices about
how to provide social security how best to
to be prudent health-care expenditures
but no one feels they have the authority to to do that and so
you know we need to kind of restore our ability to as a
as the part of the common good to make choices again dot what being responsible
lives
