ITHUBA in Zulu language means opportunity.
Ithuba Skills colleage is a private, charge-free school in the township Magagula
on the outskirts of Johannesbourg in the Republic of South Africa.
School was established by Austrian non-govermental organizaton SARCH,
which also takes care of its funding.
Ithuba consists of approx. 20 buildings that were built by various European architectural schools
under the direction of SARCH, two of them were built by students from the
Faculty of Architecture, University of Ljubljana.
Teams of architects who design and build facility in Ithuba work voluntary.
Thay must also collect money for the building.
SARCH is building social facilities in South Africa since 1998.
Despite the fact that South Africa is one of the richest African countries,
is one of the top countries on a world scale of countries with the greatest inequality.
More than 35% of the population lives with less than 2 dollars per day.
It is also the country with the most AIDS patients.
Slightly less than 6 million South Africans are infected with ***.
Apartheid, which was fatal for the country, was officially over in 1994
with democratic elections.
But racial apartheid was replaced by economic apartheid.
People live far away to each other, one in townships without water and electricity,
the other in the luxury that is comparable with Europe.
Differences between people are also reflected in education.
Schools for childrens from the townships are significantly inferior.
There is up to 60 children in one classroom.
Thats why education level is poor. Many children leave school illiterate.
