Hi I'm Suzie Carr. Thanks for tuning in to my Writing Insights video series.
In this video, I'm going to discuss how to find time for writing.
Carving out time for writing is one of the most difficult parts of being a writer.
If we want to be writers, then we must write. It is the only way to become one.
Most aspiring writers are busy. You have children and or pets who need your attention. You have
full time jobs. You have a household to maintain. You may be involved in a relationship. You
have friendships to nurture. And then of course you have facebook and twitter and google+
to deal with, too. The list is endless.
No wonder it's hard to fit writing in to this mix. How does any writer fit writing in?
I'll get to that in a moment. First I'd like to bring attention to two common mistakes
that will derail any aspiring writer in her tracks.
• First is waiting to write until inspiration strikes.
• Second is waiting for a slice of time to magically clear from the schedule.
To be successful as a writer you need to write. So, if time is at a premium for you, how do
you get the writing in?
Here's how: First decide why you are writing. Understanding
your drive will commit you to your goal better. Second schedule your writing just as you would
schedule an appointment. Third, stop dreaming about how much you want
to write. Stop talking about how much you want to write. Stop wishing you had more time
to write. Simply write. Fourth, create a goal, write it down, place
it in a prominent place, read it often and take daily action towards it. Make these actions
quantifiable. Many writers create a daily word count goal, for instance.
Bottom line, if you're serious about becoming a writer, get writing. It is as simple as
that. Make a goal, take action towards that goal and do it.
