Hi this is Miranda Thacker with your KYTC Minute. New signs along Interstate 75 in Kentucky
now designate the entire interstate corridor as the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Trail. Governor
Steve Beshear joined local leaders to unveil the new signage in Georgetown. The Tuskegee
Airmen Memorial Trail now stretches 191 miles in Kentucky from the Ohio border to the Tennessee
border. Previously, the Fayette County section of the interstate had been designated in honor
of the airmen by action of the General Assembly in 2007. The most recent session of the General
Assembly saw the passage of a House Joint Resolution to extend that designation the
length of the interstate in Kentucky. The African-American aviators derived their name
from their training at Tuskegee Army Airfield in Alabama in World War II. The original group
of Tuskegee Airmen included 11 Kentucky cadets. The Tuskegee Airmen also created opportunities
for African-Americans who trained in an array of support specialties. The interstate signs
recognize not only the air crew but also the invaluable contributions of nearly 14,000
ground support personnel. This has been your KYTC minute. Visit transportation.ky.gov every
Thursday for updated information.
