Hello
I'm Padraig King and I'd like to talk today about speaking,
speaking in public, expressing yourself
and using your voice. A number of clients have approached me recently
and told me that they had a difficulty with their voice when expressing themselves
and that as they spoke to others they found that the voice went
hoarse and became croaky. They
also they felt as thhough their voice was
getting very faint. So, what I suggest to people in that situation is
that they
consider doing the following activity:-
In a room but there's nobody else
they just begin to speak as though they are speaking to somebody,
and they're telling them a story. After a while,
even though there's nobody listening, whatever embarrassment or self-consciousness
or
lack of confidence becomes evident, they begin to physically sway backwards.....
They feel as though their weight moves back on to their heels as they stand.....
It is almost universal that when people are experiencing challenges, such as speaking,
and as it happens in that particular situation the blood supply
has drifted down from the
area of communication and conscious control in the frontal lobes of the head
down into the area around the brainstem
where you have your "Fight or Flight Reflex".
When the fight-or-flight reflex is active
it tightens up all the muscles at the back of the neck...
at the back of the head and it
switches off the energy
that would have gone into the front of the body....
into the face and into speech and to the vocal cords.
As the energy and blood supply drifted away towards the back
it made it more challenging and more difficult to breathe easily
and to express oneself appropriately.
So, what I suggest is that as they are standing there, just talking
to the empty room, that they hold their hand on their forehead
such as this and continue holding it for about a minute
and continue to speak.... just continue on speaking.....
Very soon
they will find that their body is shifting its weight
and gradually shifting their weight from heels to their toes and possibly back again.....
The weight seems to spread evenly across the whole foot. When this happens
the blood supply has come back of into the thinking part of the brain
and now clear communication is easier
the blood supply has travelled down into the vocal cords
and it is possible for them to move move easily so they no longer feel restricted when talking
This it means that the blood supply has come into the frontal lobes of
the brain, This area of the brain,
right out into the front is known as the neocortex.
This is the area that manages good communication so
if you're having challenges with speaking
with expressing yourself with projecting your voice
