Hello my name is Corey Ash.
I’m originally from back east,
New Jersey girl.
Last year...
I found my way back into school
at the University of Montana studying
Environmental studies
with a focus in
sustainable food.
My name is Kelen
and I actually just transferred here from Northeastern University of Boston.
My name is Josh Slotnick,
and I’m a professor in the environmental studies program
at the University of Montana.
PEAS farm is used
agriculture and the growing of food
as a medium for building a community.
Students are out here learning about sustainable agriculture but it’s not just a classroom.
The experience I’ve had farming is different than
any other experiences I’ve had.
This farm could play a role in
balance, and a student’s balance experience is to
provide an opportunity
to work with your hands, work outside
to work with other people and to be part of a larger community in a way that just
doesn’t happen in the classroom.
The PEAS farm means a lot to me, especially because
I am a transfer student.
it's really… I’ve
made friends here. It’s hard not to make friends when
you’re with the same group of people everyday.
You can hear it in their speech
at the beginning of the season they say “Where do you want your lettuce”
and halfway through the season they say “our carrots look beautiful”.
It becomes their place, much more than mine or the University’s.
This feels almost like a second home. I’m not just in a little apartment going to
school. I have
this place to come to.
It’s beautiful
and I feel like I belong here.
It’s been such a beautiful home.
