Hi! My name is Richard Rivas, co-owner of Black Jungle Terrarium Supply and I’m here
today on behalf of expertvillage.com discussing how to take your poison dart frogs from the
egg stage up to the froglet stage. At this point, we have tadpoles that have been hatched
out and have been being maintained and we will go over now the general development of
them. In this bin here, we have a group of tadpoles that are just recently hatched; basically
a day or so old. After approximately 2 months or so, they have grown quite a bit too where
they have greatly increased in size and you can start seeing the beginnings of the Heimlem
development. After about another month or so, they are at the stage where their front
legs are starting to emerge from the front half of the body. It is at this point they
would then be moved to a tank allowing them to complete their metamorphosis. The overall
time required for this whole process is very temperature dependent and it is important
to not try to rush it. Typically at about 75 to 77 degrees the development takes about
12 weeks. If you try to rush it by increasing the temperature, it seems to have a very strong
influence on the production of spindly leg. Spindly leg is a condition that unfortunately
can affect frogletts for a variety of reasons most of which have not been able to be figured
out yet but one thing that does consistently produce it is too warm of temperatures during
the tadpole development.
