[music] Hello, I’m Dr. Neal Schultz
[pause]
and welcome to DermTV.
A single product with a combination of both sunscreen and insect repellant
sure sounds like a great idea, certainly in terms of ease application of
two very important ingredients, time, cost and even one less layer to
apply. Well, it may sound like a great idea, but it’s really not and we
don’t recommend them. Let me explain why. As you know, for sunscreen to
work effectively, you need to reapply it frequently, but with insect
repellants, if you use too much or apply it too frequently, it can cause an
irritation or even can be dangerous. So if you’re using a combination
product that has both sunscreen and insect repellant and you’re applying it
frequently enough to get adequate sun protection, you’ll be getting too
much insect repellant ingredients and if you’re using that same single
product and applying it infrequently enough so you don’t get too much
insect repellant, you won’t be getting enough sun protection. So this is
the bottom line: use two separate products for sunscreen and insect
repellants, use them as directed by the manufacturer so you can optimize
the protection from each of them respectively, and remember, always apply
your sunscreen first.
