Roman Vilfand, the head of the HydroMetCenter of Russia
The weather problem has always been relevant, because a number of factors for carrying out various competitions
at the moment depend on the weather, and during the Olympics it is necessary to perform all the 98 disciplines.
When to hold the competition - right now, in 20 minutes, and so on
- in fact, in three days we will start presenting real meteorological support.
And now I am pleased to inform you that at all Olympic facilities in Sochi, the weather for the coming week
- i.e. until February 10th - is just wonderful: it is quite favorable for competitions.
Since December enough snow has fallen, and this factor is very important,
because natural snow is needed as the basic layer for artificial snow for ski jumping and other disciplines that...
The Olympians love artificial snow, and its existence requires a sufficient substrate
- and now the situation is completely under control, and it's very nice, nature has given us such a situation.
The temperature is also favorable for the competitions.
Air masses moving from the north cause negative night temperatures, even in Imeretinka,
and in Sochi night temperatures are around zero, and it's great, not to mention the mountain cluster.
Over the next 7 days the weather will be sunny, clear, frosty.
From February 11, the weather will start changing, and we'll discuss it already in our newsletter,
which will be updated daily on the site of Sochi-24 and on the Hydromet site.
Weather forecasting is our sacred duty.
Forecasts are issued every hour for the next day, then for the next two or three days with a readability of 3 hours,
later - every 12 hours until 6 days.
This will allow the Olympic Committee to make appropriate decisions.
Valery Lukyanov, Deputy Director of the Russian Meteorological Center for hydrometeorological support of the Sochi Olympics 2014
As the chief meteorologist, I carry the primary responsibility for organizing hydrometeorological support.
I was offered this position four years ago, and during this period
we have been able to learn from the experience of the Olympics meteorological service in Turin and in Vancouver
- Hydromet delegations went there to study the experience both in the preceding period of the Olympics,
and during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Having studied the experience, we took into consideration our peculiarities
- the features of the regions where the 22nd Olympic and 11th Paralympic Games are organized -
and made the project, for which a significant network of meteorological observations was created.
This includes terrestrial network stations, radars, orological complexes, and much more.
But our major advantage is having selected during this period a group of people
who decided to try their hand in the hydrometeorological support for the Olympics.
We have managed to train them enough over the years,
they have examined enough regional data in terms of meteorological support,
i.e. almost every year workshops were conducted with them based in Krasnaya Polyana, Sochi,
they all went through test competitions, beginning with 2011, then 2012, and 2013,
some of them were involved in the latest autumn period in 2013, and everyone learned how difficult and significant it is.
Most people work at the same facility for a few years.
At their facilities they have studied the features of the disciplines, their requirements for meteorology,
met a lot of competition organizers.
So I think that in terms of preparation, RosHydromet has fulfilled almost all the tasks that we faced,
and is ready to fulfil its task of ensuring the Olympics weather at a really high level.
