Hey you!
My name is Thomas 'TomSka' Ridgewell and welcome to Scrap'd Week
A week dedicated to videos that didn't quite make the cut
Today's video is the unfinished animated pilot to Crash Zoom.
A web toon that I still really want to make. Let's do this.

What do you think?
You're kidding me right?
HOW IS THAT WHAT I HIRED YOU TO MAKE?!
What are you talking about that's a cat food ad?
YOU SHOT A LITTLE GIRL IN THE FACE!
(Laugh) In the face!
THAT'S NOT A CAT FOOD AD!
I'm not following you
YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO PUT A CAT IN THE VIDEO!
There is a cat in the video... He's right... Around... He- Oh no that's just another gun.
HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
Wanna know my create process?
NO, NO I DON'T!
Well, first I developed some primary concepts...
And then I had a writing session...
Hmmm...
Ben, what's this gaint crate doing here... Oh it's full of guns...
(Gasp)
I am an artist.
You're fired.
Wha?
(Sad music)
I've always wanted my own animated series, but I am not an animator.
Believe me I wanted to be an animator and I tried a lot when I was younger and I tried
to start off my own animated series largely to no affect. I just didn't have the patience
and the drive to just sit down and animate characters all day everyday. That's why I
put a lot of emotional and mental energy into helping Edd with Eddsworld because that was
just a better use for my time I guess.
However in 2010 I decided to take some of the money I was finally making off YouTube
and invest it into an animator to work on a web toon. It had a lot of false starts because
I didn't really know who I wanted it to be in the web toon. Did I want it to be real
life freinds or fictional characters? I just didn't want a repeat of the Tord from Eddsworld
situation where I would make a show with someone and then they would quit and it would be very
difficult and messy and complicated.
I eventually settled on some original characters and that became the cast of Crash Zoom. A
bunch of media creatives basically based off myself and people I knew kind of meshed together.
Really ground breaking stuff, but I wrote the script and it was very fun and then it
all started just going wrong over and over again.
I started working with an animator called Edgar Nielson and it was good. Things were
good and it was coming along and it was fun. It was quite slow because I had never obviously
done my own fully fledged animated web series before, but it was definitely coming along.
I was so confident it was definitely coming out that I started giving out flyers at a
convention back in 2010 or 2011, which said 'Crash Zoom Coming Soon' and in TomSka's Day
Out 5, which was never fully released excpet in the last Scrap'd Week. I put a little thing
that was like 'Crash Zoom Coming Soon' I was very confident that this was coming out, but
then it didn't. It didn't come out...
For about three years every single animator I brought on board with the project would
try it for a bit and just quit. The opening sequence alone was animated or illustrated
by five different people and basically it was just impossible to get the show off the ground.
I spent a lot of money and I kept upping the budget hoping that some animator out there
would get on board and actually want to do it full time, but it was just kind of to no
avail. Until finally a few years later I reapproached Edgar, the original animator, and said let's
try this again and we did try it again and that's what you just saw. But where did that go wrong?
So, the animation was finally coming along and I was mostly happy with it, but then a
few weeks from completion the recurring gag of the episode where the main character would
keep bringing guns into nursery/primary school and shooting the place up became a horrifying
reality with the events of Sandy Hook and at that point it was done. Nope, not making that.
However a gender swap and a total rewrite later we picked the show back up again with
Mr. Ben 'Wonchop' Smallman, the fellow most commonly know on my channel for animating
asdfmovie these days.
And that my friends means that Crash Zoom is finally, actually, hopefully, maybe, hopefully,
defintely, maybe, coming, soon... Hopefully.
A HAPPY ENDING!
Maybe.
Thank you for watching and I will see you again tomorrow on Scrap'd Week.
Tomorrows video is a video we made and then just made again because why not...
