My name is Christopher and I am from the Division of Information Technology at Stony Brook University.
This video will demonstrate how to set up your NetID for the first time.
Your NetID is different from your 9-digit Stony Brook University ID number and is what
you will need to access technology and computing services here at Stony Brook University. These
services include but are not limited to Blackboard, Google Apps for Education, library databases,
SINC Site computers and printers, Virtual SINC Site, Wireless access and much more!
To set up your NetID, you must be logged into SOLAR. If you do not know how to log into
SOLAR using your Stony Brook University ID number and SOLAR password, please review the
previous video titled How to Log into your SOLAR for the First Time. Once you are
logged into SOLAR, click the NetID Maintenance link under Security and Personal Data
to set up your NetID.
On the NetID Maintenance page, your NetID will be displayed at the top of your screen
where it says Your NetID is... As previously mentioned, this is your username for technology
and computing services at Stony Brook University. Your NetID is generally the first letter of
your first name, followed by your last name. If you have a common name, there will be a
variation.
In order to set up your NetID password, you first need to set up a Security Question.
This question is something you will need to answer correctly every time you change your
NetID password, so be sure to make it something you will never forget. To proceed, click the
link that reads Click Here to Set Up Your Security Question and Set Your NetID Password.
Come up with a question that is easy for you to answer, but hard for others to guess. If
youd like, you can click the magnifying glass to select a standard question.
Enter the answer for your Security Question in the Response and Retype response
fields. Please make sure to make your answer a one-word answer. Also, any response you
enter will automatically be put in upper-case because your response is not case sensitive.
When you are finished, click OK.
After setting up your Security Question, you will be redirected to the NetID Maintenance
page. On this page, click the Set/Change NetID Password button.
On the next page, you will be prompted to enter your new NetID password. Please make
sure your new password is at least eight (8) characters long, contains at least one letter
and contains at least one number. When you have selected a new password, enter it into
the New Password and Confirm Password fields. When youre finished, click the
Submit Password Change button.
You will receive a pop-up letting you know that your password change has been submitted.
You must wait at least ten minutes before your new password will take effect, but, we
recommend waiting at least fifteen minutes. Click OK to close this message.
Congratulations! Youve just set up your NetID for the first time! For all future NetID
logins, remember to use the password you just created.
