If you weren’t around to see it, you might not believe it. But in the nineties, this
was a thing. Using full-motion video with full-motion actors skilled in full-motion
campiness in video games. Someone thought this was a good idea, and for a little while,
the game industry pushed the idea...that is until human beings, in a moment that stands
as a testament to the taste and decency they may have, said no.
We wanted no part of Night Trap. We deserve credit for that.
For video games, it seemed like another lesson learned. Then again, have you ever seen the
movie about the time people learned from their mistakes and didn’t awaken the beast? Reanimate
the killer? No, you haven’t. Because that movie doesn’t exist. And just like clockwork,
here we are.
We’ve opened the tomb. Mad Dog McCree walks again!
Originally released back in 19-freaking-90 and just rereleased to the eShop on the Nintendo
3DS, Mad Dog McCree occupies a distinguished place in the history of this frequently undistinguished
medium. Nonetheless, time does wonderful things. In
the years that have passed since their implosion, FMV games have kinda become a curious novelty.
Sort of like timepieces enjoyed best with a shot of whiskey and the proclamation that,
“Holy crap, this is so bad, it’s kinda good. At least you had Rocko’s Modern Life,
too.”
I assume that historical perspective is one of the primary reasons Mad Dog has returned
on the 3DS. The thing is...dude obviously hasn’t learned anything.
Mad Dog McCree is exactly as you remember it. This isn’t a new game or a slick remake.
That would be treatment unbefitting a game such as this. Instead, you’re getting an
exact port that adds touch controls and nothing else. No extras, no new weapons and worse
yet, no 3D whatsoever.
Which begs the question, what’s the point?
And I suppose if you’re approaching this game just to experience the camp—which admittedly
rules—and the charming silliness, Mad Dog McCree might be worth a look. But just keep
in mind, literally nothing has been added to sweeten the pot. This game remains as it
always was.
Whether that’s a good thing or not depends on your perspective, stranger.
