One of the things that is really special about the Long Center and about Austin is this whole
focus on what is local. As a result of some work that we've done with a show called the
"Concert Club", which features local artists in the Rollins Theater, we decided that we
would develop this free concert series which would take place in the City Terrace and allow
more and more people access to the great artists that we have in this town. We have been doing
a huge focus on free activity. We do a thing the last Tuesday of the month called trailer
food Chewsday. From my point of view, we need to demystify the experience of coming to the
Long Center. We have to make sure that people know that the Long Center is for everyone.
I think we'll be doing more free events, not less. In tough economic times, the idea of
free is really really quite appealing and exciting. Now, of course, nothing is free.
It's paid for by the support of a number of our donors who feel it's important to share
Austin artists with the Austin community. Starting on Saturday September 1st, the brothers
Del Castillo will be here. They're absolutely spectacular. And in our business, we make
the decisions about what shows we book not based on who impresses us most but based on
who we can't forget. But I tell you there's nothing really quite as special as grabbing
a few lawn chairs and bringing your family and enjoying an experience on the City Terrace,
hearing great music, with -- of course -- the best view in the city of our city. It's just
a great experience and a lot of fun and something we need to do more and more of at the Long
Center.
