Okay, so it seems I had some people in the previous video that didn't understand what
DRM means and what it does and why it's a problem. So I'm going to teach you. So take
a seat and get out your notebook. It's time to start taking notes. First, what does DRM
even mean? It means Digital Rights Management. DRM gives publisher's and creator's the digital
right to control their media. It basically exists to prevent piracy. What's piracy? Stealing
stolen goods. Remember the whole Napster and Metallica debacle? Yep, same thing, Napster
was considered piracy and that's when DRM became a thing. Now before everyone jumps
the gun saying "OMG YOU SUPPORT PIRACY?!" The answer is no! Of course not! I believe
company's that go out and produce games shouldn't be pirated and should get the profit they
earned. Epically with the amount of effort and money they throw into developing video
games that are amazing. But on the other hand, I don't support a lot of the DRM policy's
out there because it hurts the honest, loyal, paying consumer. Here's my problem. Here's
what normally happens to common people. They jump online their eyes pick up some video
game candy. They say "Yeah!" I'll take it! They then spend their hard earned cash and
digitally download a video game. They get it and it plays without issue. But here's
the thing. It's on a DRM policy. What does that mean in simple terms? It means that you
basically rented it or bought permission to access the game through their servers. Yeah,
it means you do not own that game and you cannot do as you please with that game. Unlike
buying a physical disc where you're allowed to sell it, bring it to a friends house, or
in some cases play it offline. You don't have to check in to a server, you don't have to
register it solely to one account. DRM is nothing and I mean nothing but a way to rip
away your freedoms to purchase media completely and doesn't allow you to use media like god
intended you to use it. It's regulation, it's control, it's in short...the Devil. Big problem
is the world is slowly going more and more digital. People don't want to have to go to
the store to grab video games or wait for the game to come in the mail. They want it
ASAP. Which I understand. But the more we support digitally media, the more we lose
our freedoms to get what we pay for. Hope you enjoyed the lesson and understand what
is what. Now before I end this video. I want to tell you I'll be talking about Steam next.
Steam is digital media, DRM, and I actually support Steam. Why? Subscribe to find out.
See you all later!
