I'd like to tell our faculty and students we only have one type of program,
and that's an excellent program.
When our students come in touch with our faculty,
they're being nourished.
They're being nourished with the latest knowledge.
They're being nourished by the inspiration of our faculty,
who are at the top of their game in their fields;
by ethnicity; race; gender; age.
We're looking at a wonderful mix of people,
so that they get a wide range of experience. There's no one idea that's the best idea.
All ideas should be challenged.
Therefore, there's intellectual diversity.
The people are challenged to grow:
grow in the way they think; and
grow in the way they understand the world;
and grow the way that they can articulate
their point of view.
(bubbling noises)
Now, what is a land-locked state like Indiana
doing with underwater archeology?
We're doing underwater explorations of Captain Kidd's pirate ship. We might be land-locked,
but we're nationally and internationally known for the quality of the programs we have.
And another illustration are the
twenty-plus programs,
agreements we have with universities all over the world
Now, closer to home,
we do a lot of national parks' work.
So there's opportunities when you come here
to spent some time in a foreign land
or in another state.
If you're interested in parks and recreation,
there are all kinds of jobs available and experiences available, while you're in school.
In terms of our department of Applied Health Sciences, our students go to the Centers for Disease
Control,
the state health department, local health department, community work.
I mean, take your pick. It's like a
ten-page menu.
If we have
an obese population,
medicine is going to have to deal with a lot of heart attacks.
I think the mission of HPER is to keep people healthy.
That means we want to keep them out of the hospital.
We want them
minimize the amount of medical interventions they need,
because they have an active and healthy lifestyle.
The kinds of people we have teaching research are proven,
successful professionals
who were doing some very serious research
in very serious areas like diabetes,
food nutrition and obesity reduction,
the reduction of ***.
If your intent is to become
a serious researcher and you want a good quality education,
you have to come here
with the idea that you're going to be working hard and working on significant problems,
with people
who are excellent researchers in their own right.
It's always a major life decision when you're
picking up household to move to a place and making
an investment in a new place.
I did that recently myself,
and what I can tell you is the School of HPER, number one, is a community
in and of itself.
We embrace extended families. The Bloomington community as the best combination of town
and university. There are a lot of activities to get involved with
in this town. It's a civically-minded town,
and it's one of the best places -- in terms of quality of life -- in the United States.
The thing that
is most important to me
is that we create a legacy
by training the next generation
of people,
who will be responsible
for the health and well-being of our nation
and for the world for that matter.
The thing that was most proud of are our students,
because they end up going on to leadership positions.
They end up being the future that we invest in,
and the types of things that we train our students to do in HPER
are the kinds of things that really make a difference,
are standards, they're models for the twenty-first century.
The thing that all of their fields have in common, is that we end up helping others,
strive to have the most healthy,
the most rewarding lives
that they can.
If you want a profession that's geared towards helping others,
HPER's place to be.
