My name's Gareth Cattermole.
I'm a staff photographer with Getty Images and I've been a professional
photographer
for around fourteen years. We have a
a vast array of assignments throughout the year. The travelling is
quite immense. It's great you know to see go and the world
and work with amazing people. I shoot a lot of Fashion Weeks.
I like to shoot a lot of backstage, occasionally a bit of runway photography
but a lot of outside, a lot of the people at fashion week as well
but its always in black and white. My favourite lens is the 85ml.
You can blow the background out completely if I'm shooting at F2 all the time.
The quality is just incredible when the light's extremely low. You can team that
with the body, you can walk around, you can stay quite invisible with it.
It's just so versatile and I can just use that whole time
and backstage it's great. I like to work on my own.
Sometimes I like to blend in, sort of stay in a corner and just
document what's going on around me. One of my favorite shots I've taken with the NX
was backstage at Paris Fashion Week, shooting an F2,
and it was a model having her makeup done.
I wanted the background to be completely black and she was half in, half out with
a white and a dark background.
So I waited and waited for her to move into the darker background because I just wanted it
to be
just her face and I just wanted the background to be completely out.
When I first started I was incredibly nervous about taking portraits of
people. You have to get over that and sometimes you know
it'll take going up to someone and asking "Can I take a picture of you?" You really must push
yourself
to develop and to see an improvement.
