Hi, I’m Jeff Ready, CEO of Scale Computing. Our company is founded on the work of extraordinary
people, as that is what this month we are supporting the extraordinary efforts of Jim
Hillmann, a man fighting to make life better for millions and we’re inviting you to join
us.
Jim lost his mother to breast cancer in 2004 and has since dedicated himself to the fight
against this terrible disease that now affects one in eight women in our country. Jim’s
goal is to walk all 14 Susan G. Koeman Walk for the Cure events across America, a total
of over 900 miles raising up to $50,000. Here’s Jim to tell you about this incredible endeavor.
I could also tell when it wasn’t good news happening with my mom and dad because my dad
would call up and say ‘wait a minute while I get your sister on the line’ and he would
conference. And that is what happened when they first told us that my mom had breast
cancer. So she hit it head on and as I’ve told many people, breast cancer may have been
what killed her but she never backed down from death and she never, you know, backed
away from the situation, she took it head on and she dealt with it. It finally dawned
on me that sitting on the side lines wasn’t a good thing to do, that you had to get involved
if you wanted to make a difference in this, in this case the fight against breast cancer.
And, about the time that happened, on the radio station on the way to work was the beginning
of the commercials for that year’s walks for Susan G. Koeman 3 Day for the Cure. I
started feeling a little bit like I needed to do something special in 2011 so I came
up with the idea of walking in all of them. And knowing I had to raise over $30,000 to
walk in all the events and so it has been about a 14 month adventure and I’ve got
about two months to go. And, doing all of these walks in one year has been far beyond
what I expected it to be like, breast cancer is still a big issue, it kills a whole lot
of people every year and unless you keep it in front of you, keep people aware of it,
it tends to fall in the background because something else becomes more important as it
were. And it has been pretty amazing journey, much more impactful than what I thought it
was going to be. Just the tremendous support of everybody who makes sure I can reach this
goal.
Jim’s passion inspired us here at Scale so we created the Show Us Your Rack campaign,
between now and November 4 visit scalecomputing.com and click the pink bar at the bottom of the
page for details. We will donate $1 to Passionately Pink for every entry and one lucky winner
will win a free storage cluster. From all of us here at Scale, thank you.
