Hello,
I'm Dr. Neal Schultz.
[pause]
And welcome to DermTV.
Cherry hemangiomas are little, bright red, pinpoint to match head sized,
flat spots that over time, become raised, more dome shaped
and literally look like miniature cherries sitting on your skin.
They, along with seborrheic keratoses,
are the two most common normal growths
that we get more and more of as we get older.
They’re called “hemangioma” because hemangioma means
a benign growth of blood vessels. Just an accumulation of
extra numbers of normal tiny blood vessels.
And because there’re so many blood vessels
that have lots of extra blood in them, they look red.
Cherry hemangiomas can start at any time in your life,
but once you start to get them, then you just get more and more
as you get older. They’re always benign, they never become cancerous
and they’re only important for two reasons.
First, when they get scratched or rubbed, they bleed pretty vigorously
and that’s kind of scary.
Second, they can have a significant negative cosmetic impact
if you have enough of them.
How do you know if you're going to get Cherry hemangiomas?
I'm sorry to say that they're hereditary.
Thanks Mom and Dad!
So while there’s nothing you can do to stop them from coming,
and while there’s no cream or topical medication
that makes them go away,
the good news is they’re very, very easily instantly removed
with painless laser procedures.
And don’t forget, whether you remove them or not,
they’re completely harmless.
