Hi and welcome to part three of my Intro to REDkit video series
if you've been following along you'll have a version of the arena level that
is acting as our sandbox
this tutorial covers using the asset browser to add new objects and entities
to the game world
and show you a bit more about organizing and placing them
So try to find your way in the editor down to this entry bridge here
If you still have the tutorial group loaded in the scene explorer you'll
see a
bloody corpse was lying here
I've unloaded that but for the sake of this tutorial we're gonna use this little sandy
area here
as our sandbox
so first things first let's set up a group and a layer for our new stuff
so in the scene explorer
right-click world and click add group. I named mine "sandbox"
Now right click your new sandbox group
and click "Add Layer"
I named my layer "Landscape"
So the last thing you need to do is double click that landscape layer so it's active.
You can see it as active because of the bold font.
So if you want to addsome rocks
to the shore
in this area
You could select this rock cluster
and press control c to copy it
control v to paste it and then you could move it into place
maybe rotate it a little bit
and there you go
the shore is a bit more rocky
But what if you want to find something else, something that's not in this level
and place it in.
That's where the asset browser comes in
now press Control+A to open the asset browser
the asset browser is similar to a windows explorer window
It allows you to search through all the available assets creations including new
objects, sounds, textures, even characters show up in here,
and place them in your scene or duplicate them to make changes
usually the best way to find something in the asset browser is via the search field
so just type in "flag" and hit enter
all the assets with flag in the name will show
You'll notice here there's a lot of different ways that assets are displayed
in here you can see
some 2D textures, a normal map
Some scripts, meshes, really all kinds of assets can show up here
To make it a little easier to find what we're looking for we can filter
by the using the resource class filter at the top
For this case, find CEntityTemplate
and hit enter in the search field again
this opens another search results tab
this time only showing entity templates
that have flag in the name
If you don't see that search field just hit this little green arrow
it hides and shows the filters
so an entity template is a neat concept within REDkit, it allows a group of
entities to be saved within a prefabricated template
torches for example use not only a 3D model
but also one or more lights as well as potential other components like
particle emitters
with entity templates you don't have to manually assemble each of these each time
you want a torch in your scene
It can be saved in a pre assembled template.
so double clicking an entity template
inside the asset browser will open it in the entity editor
Where you can see all the components
We'll explore the entity editor more in a later
but for now find this flag_arena entity
and drag it into your scene
and i can click back over into the worldview
one once it's in your scene and selected
and
you can scale it
all the transform tools from the
second tutorial
You can also delete an entity, first select it, and then hit the "Delete" key.
you'll get a confirmation dialog making sure
you want to delete it, and you can also delete multiple entities at
once if you select groups using
shift or control
so that's it for this
tutorial
and this pretty much wraps up the intro Next we'll move into
creating your own terrain and creating your own brand new world
