So if this is the size of the smalls, he went ahead and said ok. well sometimes maybe it's
going to be fun for me to make a capitol that's absolutely huge like this. Maybe it's just
going to work with the kind of spacing that I have to do. And then he brought in these,
these things that I'm going to call flourishes ok. And so maybe he was nice and relaxed about
it and he came up with beautiful letters like that and he exaggerated some of them. And
then maybe he decided that there might be a reason why the capitol only wanted to be
small like the small letters and that was ok, too. And then he did something really
fun and he said o.k. maybe I'm going to make some of these letters upright even thought
the italic itself is basically a slanted hand. So here's an example of one that came out
of his book; a P that was upright. Now I have two examples to show you of present day use
of italic. Both of them mine because; rather prohibited about showing you anybody else's
work. So this is a piece that I did which is basically very, meant to be humorous o.k.
and it's called "Fifty preposterous postulations" and this; this, if I brag about this it's
because look at what I did; I actually managed to justify the right margin. And this is a
little bit tough but it helped since I was doing the actual wording for this piece, I
could change my wording if I need to; to make the end of the line happen right. So I'll
just tell you that the first postulation is preposterous as it is you might be able to
understand it; one: All pizza deliveries should be made by helicopter. So I said that and
now it's, now it's out there in great wide world. And the other thing I wanted to show
you was another piece that I actually wrote myself but this is italic but it's an upright
italic, so here we are talking about italic cursive running; "cursoring" meaning to run
in Latin but this is upright. So all kinds of variations. Once you understand the basic
idea behind a hand you can, you can start; you can start playing with it. This is how
type faces are designed.
