Brian D. Lawenda, MD>>> Acupuncture is an ancient technique that is used for many different
reasons. As an acupuncturist and radiation oncologist myself, I did extra training in
acupuncture through Stanford UCLA program.
We occasionally will incorporate acupuncture for patients with lymphedema to potentially
decrease the risk of developing lymphedema. There is some pilot data that has come out
from Memorial Sloan-Kettering recently that found that the use of acupuncture with patients
who already have lymphedema appears to decrease the severity of lymphedema which is fascinating.
These are small studies and will need to be followed up more closely overtime with larger
patient populations, but it at least is very promising, its intriguing use of acupuncture.
