So this event is called Glow for the Philippines and it's supposed to raise awareness and support
for those who are suffering right now in the Philippines. We just got back from Tacloban
and Palo and we saw incredible devastation. We especially would like to support Palo Alto's
sister city, Palo, in the Philippines, which is about 90% devastated after the typhoon.
It's a charity event with 4 artists that are performing tonight. We have donation tables
set up by ODFL which is One Dollar for Life and by Neighbors Abroad to collect cash donations
so that we can give the Philippines, especially the city of Palo, some relief effort. It was
a really fun opportunity and I'm just really glad to be here. It felt really natural. It
was really fun to be able to get in front of some people and kind of be creative and
kind of showcase our work. It was really fun to be able to do that. Yeah, and also for
a good cause as well. There are lots of kids your age who are victims of typhoon Haiyan.
They will appreciate knowing that you did this for them, and it means a great deal to
me and the Palo Alto community. My name is Sunny Dykwel and I'm a long-time Palo Alto
volunteer person. I'm really happy that they asked me to speak because this hits really
... it hits home to me. The Palo Alto Teen Advisory Board is running this event. The
Palo Alto Teen Advisory Board is a segment of the Palo Alto Recreation department. Our
group works with the city to encourage teen involvement and to host events such as this
one that are primarily for teens. I think this is really important that we're more informed
about everything. As teenagers, here on the west coast, we live in a bubble sometimes
or we're not aware of whats going on. I know that I wasn't entirely aware of what was going
on in the Philippines until a week after. It goes to show you a little bit. Teens should
be involved because I feel like teens sometimes get into a mindset and think that things aren't
really important. You can be kind of selfish when you're younger, so I think it's really
good for teens to become aware of other things. The reason why the Teen Advisory Board is
putting this event on is because we feel that it's really important one: for the teens to
get involved. As the Teen Advisory Board, that's our duty: to make sure that the teens
in Palo Alto are actively engaged and involved and part of that is being socially aware so
that they know about what's going on around them and know what's going on in the world.
That's something really important that we as teens should be focusing on. This year,
the Palo Alto Teen Advisory Board is aiming to host at least one more service event and
a teen dance in either late Winter or early Spring, with the opening of the new Mitchell
Park library. If someone wants to help the victims of the Palo Leyte typhoon, they need
to look at the website for Neighbors Abroad who is in charge of the Palo Alto sister cities.
