This is a commercial break for negative space. In calligraphy we have to pay a lot of attention
to negative space and we actually have to see negative space as positive space. We call
our negative spaces counters. Here is my favorite example of a perfectly wonderful negative
space. It's the FedEx logo. Do you see the arrow? Do you see it now? Do you see it now? Do you
see it now? Because this arrow is a thing or shape that we recognize it's a positive
space. Now, when we do letters we do letters with the idea that what we're drawing are
the counters or the negative spaces. Therefore
I'm drawing the inside of the bowl of the R and I'm drawing this shape in here. Therefore,
I can take this brush and I can draw a line like this, which is a black line, and I can
draw another line like that, which is a black line, and I've drawn a third line because
I've drawn that white line. So, there you go negative space.
