When you close your eyes and visualize our planet, what do you see? An orb hanging in
the blackness of space? A hand drawn map elegantly defining the line between land and see?
Now go outside and stand barefoot in the grass, look around, breath the air, feel the planet
move beneath you. What you're feeling is a living planet. What you're feeling is our
home. But the planet feels us too. It feels the
increasing weight of us, and the stress of supporting that weight. You may not realize
that because home may look fine where you're standing now. But stand in the congested streets
of a developing country and you'll see millions of people struggling to feed themselves. Stand
in the Amazon or the Arctics and you'll see ancient rainforests and majestic shelves of
ice disappearing. And stand in one of the many isolated villages throughout the world,
and you'll see farmers with little access to technology or markets, unable to pull themselves
out of poverty. These global challenges are complex and there
are no easy answers. But one thing is clear; agricultural innovation holds a key solution
and we pledge to do our part. We're Monsanto, and we're working with farmers
and partners worldwide to realize a vision for sustainable agriculture. It's a vision
that strives to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population, to protect and preserve
this planet we all call home and to help improve lives everywhere. We are working with farmers
to increase what they can grow on an acre of land, and we're making great progress.
We are working to reduce the amount of land, water and energy they'll need to grow those
crops. And we're working to improve lives in the process by harnessing innovative technology
to give growers better tools so they can provide for their families, their communities and
people around the world. Because when farmers prosper, so many more will also prosper through
healthier diets, greater educational opportunities and brighter economic futures.
Agriculture has always had a role in shaping the future of humanity, and we know it will
take more than one company to shape the future of agriculture. So whatever the world looks
like where you stand, the truth is we're all in this together. And we believe working together
we can create a brighter, sustainable world for all of us. That's the world we visualize
at Monsanto and we're working everyday to make it reality.
