i'd like to start up the afternoon as
you probably all know
those of us who have been an adult add
for some time
this truly is a changing
landscape
an adult education
i've been an adult education since nineteen seventy eight
and i have never seen that changes
that were experiencing
over the past
or three years
it's really
unprecedented
yen adult education so for those of you that aren't new
this isn't typical
this isn't the way things you know have down
is the way things are
and
we need to
look at the landscape
look at
how we're going to move forward together
adult education the best that it can be
so
i'd i'd like to share with you some of my thoughts on
the changing landscape
chevy
uh...
one focus
that has not been error in the past that is their front-and-center dallas the
transition to post secondary education training the workforce
in the past
we have focused on
surveyed adults at whatever their level and whatever their need
to come into adult education
and two
place that adult
enough invidious l eighty ee esi program
where they need to be in order to unquote profit from instruction
move along for their goal
this shift estan
that uh... harris st
um...
very laser focus on comet laser focus vision
on with the fact that
these adults mentor program in order to recheck all and that goal
needs to include
some
posts and and postsecondary education
training or they're coming
in order to get a job
to get a better job to get training to get a job
and our job in adult education
it's not just their time in adult and
looking at
their goal
helping
plan the transition and supporting that transition to post secondary
education training that's the shift
it used to be
bengal lies
de g_d_
database called mama
go on into
post-secondary whatever
now
is shifted that part of our responsibility is to ensure
that there's a seamless transition
into postsecondary education training and the work force
the second shift
that is fairly his store
in the united states
the agreement on a common core
uh... content standards
has been also unprecedented
uh... over the past thirty to forty years education stands states rights
issue
uh...
not in national
overview
so
for forty six states to agree
on a common kore
standards israeli president
and get will impact it will effects huddled education
whether you're in a statement
whereas the k_-twelve delivery
or a community college delivery
or
here under the processes of the department of labor
or other entity
it will impact
all of us
the focus on career pathways in certification
this is not new
it's been around for a long time
there's a renewed focus on it
and i think c
ke here's pathways with focus before a career technical education we focused on
getting
adults and two apprenticeship programs
the the focus the the new focus on career pathways
that extend all the way down into the lower levels maybe india cell
is something new
to say that
no we're not quite that way
for this the eve of the csr student
to arrive at an advanced level
in order to then go into
whatever linear approach
it's much more looking at
what are defective models to move our adults
efficiently
effectively in cost-effectively
to their next steps
and that involves working with our partners
and
uh... vocational critter technical education
so we have this
the one stops
really
requires that clever asiana
the partners that we talk about it many times has a lot of rhetoric
this this not actually happening with some ground so to speak
and much more into the future
it will be
bomb because we can't get there
with our partners
the increasing use of technology
this is all in a related we also can't
help transition adults into postsecondary education training do it
effectively
incorporating a common core standards create pathways
without
effectively using technology
we have
increased use of distance learning
women increased use of blended learning
and blended learning is helping our adults when they leave the classrooms
reinforce what they've learned in the classroom
to move them forward
faster
more efficiently
uh...
videotaping classroom
uh... lectures and lessons
so that
are adults can review them
there's just all sorts of connections now with technology
and going forward
that won't stop till just increasingly
because will become more and more involved in technology
challenge i think for all of us is many of our instructors
and staff feel uncomfortable
with the technology
so it's not just a challenge to cooperate
into the delivery about effective
instruction an assessment
and career pathways
but the professional development that's going to be needed
in order to accomplish this
is critical is absolutely critical or it's not going to happen
and
new integrated delivery models i mentioned this stuff but the transitions
were not going to get there
without looking at integrated delivery models we can't do it without our
partners
it doesn't happen overnight
it happens person by person
relationship by relationship
because becoming
trusting of our partners and getting them to know
costs
and what we do and what our skill set is an adult education
in order to partner better
we are also
planning ahead for an assessment series
uh... it's going to incorporate a lot of these elements that i just talked about
it's going to rely on technology
when we talk about what is assessment going to look like
intier two thousand fifteen
sixteen
and seventeen
it's hard to imagine
that we would be still
paper-based
but we are looking at is
the use of technology
for computer delivered assessment
and that would be all the way down to
beginning may be d_e_g_r_e_e_s_ so
utilizing technology utilizing touchscreen
technology and computers
going forward
that that looks like
where we need to be
we also will be an com incorporated the common core
standards
we will be ensuring at the top ten seventy level
that there is a smooth transition to post secondary
will be focusing on the content standards
and primarily college in career edema standards
so that that transition to post secondary education and training
will be smooth
that they will have the skills they need to transition
expands the national external diploma program and workforce skills
certification system
to provide options for high school diploma
and work for certification
um...
our focus is on assessment
research and resources to support quality assessment
and also to inform best practices
we do a really good job
interests are
ensuring that the assessment
is proper
that were to increase processing
etc returning and the scores
i'm not sure it that we have done a really good job
using
the results
to better informed
instruction
how much time do we stand with our instructors safe here's how you use the
test results
here's how you can inform instruction
here's how you can
uh... measure
what's working
and what's not working
in classrooms
and programs using data
focus on technology we are going to streamline the assessment and reporting
with computer and web based systems
were intended
for two thousand fifteen sixteen
and we want to continue
to focus on professional development
to support you
in providing quality professional development
off focused on student success
why are we doing professional development
if not
to promote student success
how do we evaluator professional development
are we getting there
intern sustained success
and what's working and what's not working
and
programs
seemed to be lagging behind
by providing additional professional development but type of professional
development is going to work to help those programs
help their students
this is the changing landscape this is
this is the
uh... era network in
and
with limited resources
so
it's not just the cliches you did that work
smarter and harder
uh...
but we really do need to look at the landscape and we didn't really need to
look at
what research is do we have available in how can we use the more strategically
