Hi, I'm Secretary of State Mark Martin, and welcome to This Week in Arkansas History.
In 1932 the first woman joined the United States Senate.
Hattie Caraway was appointed to complete her husband's term after his death in 1931.
Arkansas voters elected her in her own right that fall.
Louisiana Senator Huey Long helped her campaign.
She served in the Senate until J. William Fulbright defeated her.
Her term ended in January 1945.
Caraway served on the Agricultural Committee. She was the first woman to chair a Senate Committee.
She rarely spoke on the Senate floor but was active in committee meetings.
Hattie Caraway died in Virginia in 1950. She is buried beside her husband in Jonesboro.
