Shirataki noodles are also known as miracle noodles or zero calorie noodles and are made
completely from glucomannan. Glucomannan is an insoluble fibre made from the roots of
plants such as konjac.
Glucomannan cannot be broken down or absorbed by the gut and so it provides the body with
no calories. It often used as a substitute for carbohydrate packed foods such as pasta, and can help with weight loss.
Glucomannan can also protect the digestive system. It does this because it cannot be
absorbed and so forms a stool, the fibre protects the gut walls from harmful chemicals and free radicals.
Shirataki noodles can also help the body regulate cholesterol. When excess cholesterol is secreted
into the gut, the glucomannan will hold the cholesterol in the stool and prevent its re-absorption.
Shirataki noodles are also a useful food in preventing type 2 diabetes, as it replaces
the high carbohydrate part of meals.
By doing this it reduces the insulin spike you receive after meals, helping your body
regulate its blood sugar.
