Hi this is Burns Hargis with another edition of Inside OSU and this is a special one because we are at the University Counseling and
we are with Dr. Suzi Burks who is the head of the counseling service here at Oklahoma State. Hi Suzi. Hello welcome to
the counseling center and to the Reboot center. Now tell us about all the services that university counseling provides.
University Counseling Services is an umbrella name for five different departments. We have the Student Counseling Center, Alcohol & Substance Abuse Center,
we also have Student Disability Services, we have the Student Conduct Office, and our most recent department is the Reboot Center.
How many counselors do you have? About 15 all together. Let's talk about the Reboot Center. We are so excited about the Reboot Center.
Let me describe where we are, we are on the third floor on the north side of the Student Union. Almost to the northeast corner. 8 00:01:01,000 --> 00:1:14,000 The idea of a stress management, anxiety management type center was so exciting to me and I brought it back to Dr. Joni Hayes
who coordinates the reboot center. There's plenty of stress surrounding a college campus. Oh absolutely, and we got a lot of faculty and staff
saying why isn't it open to us cause we are only open to students right now. But we are very very fortunate Dr. Leebird funded most of the equipment
and furnishings that you see. And we just took off and it started kind of slow at first but slowly it's picking up.
We have a lot of regulars, a lot of new students and we're getting referrals now. We have students that come in that have been here before
that come in and sit down for 15 or 20 minutes before an exam just to calm themselves. We have students that come in, and do the same thing
before they go down to career services for an interview. The professional that really operates all of this is Dr. Joni Hays right? Dr. Joni Hays right.
Why don't you talk a little about it because you work with the students kind of up close and personal so tell us how this has gone?
Sure, It's gone very well since opening in the fall, we find that most students really identify with stress, stress affecting performance,
performance academically, performance interpersonally and so while some people might say that technology causes stress
we use technology to help students manage stress. What are the things you do to teach those skills? We have some very innovative software
that does a great job about teaching about stress about the relaxation response. Students are connected to a sensor on the earlobe or the fingers
that gives them feedback or measures heart rate. I'm a little stressed right now, do you think you could show me how to relax? Absolutely.
So Joni this is where we go huh? Oh look whose here. Oh Burns this is so cool. Are you dealing with a little First Cowgirl stress? I am so unstressed.
Really? I am. How did that happen? Your going to love it. Well show me what we do here. Well sure have a seat. Here we go.
What we have open is alive and alive offers a lot of options, a great orientation about stress, how to use deep breathing as a way to relax,
environments where we start with an image and as you relax it changes, evolves, fills in. Then we have the racing sort of games
dual drive. Racing? Racing, car racing. Relaxation basically fuels the car or provides acceleration to the car so a way to learn to relax in situations
where you wouldn't ordinarily relax. And we'll just start a mission, like the basic race. Now I hear music. Yeah we have music through headphones.
So now this top one is my heart rate, well I'm barely alive. You were so relaxed coming in. Yeah, and then these waves down here on the bottom
is how you should breathe so you explained to me that I breathe in on the way up and then I blow out on the way down.
And actually you audibly blow out right? Yes. Good. Well it's kind of like yoga isn't it? Yes, your good at breathing Burns.
Well I've been doing it a long time. Breathing is a great way to learn to relax because your breathing anyway so it's something that with some practice
can be very effective to use. Oh look that just moved up some. Yeah there you go. I know you've got students who love this
and I think we are getting ready to talk to one now right? Yes Kelsey. Okay great.
Well now I'm with Kelsey Stein whose a Junior from Midwest City, Oklahoma and majoring in Sports Management right? Yes. Well fantastic.
How did you find the reboot center? I mean how did this happen that you are here? Well I am an office assistant in Dr. Burns' office
and Dr. Hays came into the office one day and I had let everyone in the office know I was stressed about my future schedule for the fall.
And so she recommended that when this place opened I should come by here and I've probably spent hours a week in here ever since.
Has it helped you in your academics? Yes I don't think I would have done as well last semester without coming here, I would recommend coming here before you take an exam.
What's your favorite thing to do here? Probably the nightlife activity, you have to breathe in order for it to soar through the city, it's really fun.
Have you recommended this to a lot of your fellow students? Yeah I've brought several friends here and I work at the Colvin Center also so I always
tell them if they are stressed out and if its too busy to work out you can just come learn breathing exercises too.
Well that's great that's wonderful it was really nice talking to you Kelsey. You too. Good to see you. Thank you.
And thanks for teaching me a lot about stress.
We really appreciate Suzi Burks and her whole team, introducing us to this special service that's available at University Counseling.
So that's it I'll see you next time but right now I'm still feeling a little stressful so I'm going to go try to get relaxed at Reboot.
